Live CD: too small diskspace
« on: June 11, 2010, 05:51:12 PM »
I am running PCLinuxOS2010 Live CD for the first time, and I can't do very much before I am out of space on the disk... Programs are crashing, and I have been logged out twice...

I suppose it is the /dev/root that is out of space. Is that a RAM-disk?

KDiskfree says that /dev/root is only 489 MB, and is (currently) 93% full. I got 1024 MB RAM memory.

Do I need more RAM for PCLinux2010 Live CD or can I solve this problem in another way?

Another question:
I feel 2010 is a little slow... Now, I can't compare the Live CD with a HD installation, but you who have installed 2010 on HD: How do you feel compared to 2009? Same speed? Slower? How Much slower? For example: to open the filebrowser or change folder in the filebrowser is very slow in the Live CD version.

When you are running the system live, every app you run loads into RAM. If you are using "heavier" apps, like firefox, you use more and more RAM with each activity you do. Open more apps, and you use more RAM. Eventually, you will run out of available RAM.
The fix for this is to install more RAM or install to HDD.

Changing a folder in the file browser is related to the speed of the cd drive.
When it is installed it is just as fast as 2009.
In general, anything that is IO related will always be super slow on a livecd in comparison to an install on a hard disk.
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

OK, I hope 2010 is not much slower than 2009. It felt like the 2010 LiveCD was slower than the 2009 LiveCD, and used more RAM. I would like to avoid to buy new hardware every other year because of heavier software.... I think software development should go the other way - focus om simplicity and speed rather than fancy stuff that you normally don't need. I will install PCLinucOS 2010 ... I I think it will be great!  :)
