Please don't get me wrong, but I'm having severe issues at this point with KDE.... I have long thought that KDE was the best interface. Gnome tended to hide too much... or so it seemed. I could definitely be wrong about that.

To the point, KDE 4.4.X is driving me insane. I tried pinoc's Folder view settings and flipped back to Desktop... I really appreciate what pinoc has done. It seems closest to the approach of 3.5. Adding items to that hidden folder is a true pain. A right-click on an application out of the Application Launcher adds to a desktop... really?? which one?? Clearly this adds an application shortcut to the /home/xxx/Desktop folder. A folder view setup blows this program up unless you want to start digging and moving items into hidden folders. In my opinion, KDE should have a right-click function to add to the present view (Folder or Desktop). I have gone to the KDE.org pages trying to figure this out and the information provided there is a bit lacking. I have posted on this forum trying to get a better understanding of KDE's views (folder and desktop). What I understand now is that Folder views and Desktop views are incompatible. Zooming out is an interesting exercise also. I seem to have extra "Activities" that are apparently created when you change between Folder View and Desktop. What?? This seems anti-Linux to me. I should be in control of those activities. Maybe I am, but there is no real documentation as to how or what it seems.

What I really want to do is be able to have multiple "desktops" (I could care less what type of view) where I can add folders, application shortcuts, an application bar (perhaps like cairo-dock), an analog clock (apparently with widgets) and when I log on go back to "Desktop 1" with the wallpaper staying in place. I seem to constantly end up in some random desktop with and maybe without  the wallpaper I selected prior to logging out.

I installed on my work machine and I left the Desktop folder alone. I now have a, sort of, Twinview (I'm still working on that - both screens are working but I can't get the main panel to expand across both....I haven't figured out how to change the wallpaper on each... I'm sure there is more...) system and when I tried to move the desktop icon for a folder shortcut from one screen to the other it added a widget to the other screen. When I deleted the widget, it deleted both the widget and the icon.... I restored it of course but my screen is now cluttered...

I appreciate the help I've received in this forum and regularly look to it (you) for help, but I'm at a frustration point and don't think anyone here can solve these problems as they seem to be designed into KDE at this point. I realize fully that this may be my inability to understand what to do to accomplish what I want. Hence this post as a last ditch effort to try to have someone help me solidify the functioning/interface of KDE before I bail and move to some other desktop manager that, while not as impressive as KDE, won't leave me trying to figure out what just happened.

Sorry for the length of this post and its rambling. I've had a bad week and am extremely tired. Perhaps that is not helping my frustration. Thanks for reading and any help you can toss my way.

In case anyone needs it, I have stabilized KDE to the point I can use it... the dual monitor setup is functioning almost like I want it to. It took giving up on different activities on each desktop and utilizing the folder views.... The only thing I can't find a way to solve is having the main panel stretch across both monitors. Xinerama actually allows this but then maximizing a window stretches it across both screens (sort of a problem using a word processor  :) ) so I cut that off. You also have to redirect each window to separate locations (DUH!!! - I should have caught this one prior to my post above, but I guess I've been running a little to fast lately) to keep the double icons/widgets from appearing.

Something I learned that is not necessarily readily available is that the nvidia-settings program automagically reworks your xorg.conf file [and makes it prettier than I can]. It does not seem to change the Xinerama setting, but the rest is very nice. There may be a way through nvidia-settings to do so, but I'm done for a while messing with this setup.

Glad I've found a way to stick with KDE.... love PCLinuxOS.... it beyond ROCKS!

Im running PCLinuxOS 2010.1 with latest updates and just 2 kde windows.
First desktop has folder activity (which allows you to use applets and icons etc to the desktop). My second desktop, has
desktop activity settings (just wallpaper).

Whenever I log out, KDE always starts in second desktop, (think this may be a bug) as kde 3.5.x always started
with the last desktop.
This may be part of your problem.

To have different wallpapers on each, go to kde control center, look and feel, multiple desktops, tick different activity
each desktop then use folder settings.

Cant help with twinview, as I have a single monitor.
