Looking for upgrade instructions??
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:24:18 PM »
Good day, I am currently running the previous version of PCLinuxOS and am very happy with it. I thought I would wait a bit before installing the new PCLinuxOS so now I am beginning to investigate the upgrade process. I have been seaching the forum and also the WIKI and I can't seem to find 'upgrade' instructions?? I found lots of 'how to install' brand new but maybe I missed something as I can't seem to find instructions on doing an upgrade? Do I have to remove everything and start all over?? It seems to me that I should be able to do an install and not have to reinstall all my data. I remember reading some posts that there where problems with going to KDE 4 that you had to reinstall some stuff but is that still true if I upgrade to PCLinuxOS 2010?? The last time I upgraded, I think I just downloaded and built a CD then updated from the CD so can I still do the same thing to get to 2010?? I dont remember having to reinstall anything at that time, I did the upgrade and it worked just fine.
Maybe I am getting old and just can't see the obvious so please be patient but damned if I could find the update instructions.
Ron

There have been too many changes to the building blocks of PCLinuxOS from 2009 version to 2010 version. So they say that it needs to be installed afresh.
You have to back up your /home directory to a separate partition. Format both /home and /root and install from a fresh .iso image downloaded from servers.
Once you have finished installing, you will have to copy only the data that you actually want from your old backed up /home to the new /home.

There are threads on this forum which explain why it should be done so.

Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(
