That icon is the alsa icon. The panel config file lists it as:
Quote
Plugin {
    type = volumealsa

Mine is black, too. It isn't a bug. It is just alsa.

Hi,

I was wondering too, why it is black. Is it possible to replace it with volumeicon ? And if yes, once the default removed how do you add a volumeicon icon on the panel on the right side ?

Hi,
volumeicon has several themes available, and it is light, so it will not bring in  kde libraries.

I am using volumeicon on my lxde installs.. just install it and reboot your desktop...it will add itself to the panel then just remove the other icon...

Hi,
If it is volumeicon, there is a right-click menu.

As I said previously, on lxpanel, the volume icon is provided by volumealsa. If you want to switch to something else, you can.

I have found a work around, if you go to /usr/share/lxde and edit the config file as root. Now change the icon theme to nuoveXT-aero and you will get the blue-green icon instead after reboot.  It seem that this conifg file over rules the local file in the users home folder. Not sure if that is the real bug or not.  You can use a # in front of the the setting so it uses the users setting instead.
