Getvirtualbox--Just works with flair
« on: June 09, 2010, 10:33:00 PM »
I followed the thread birthing the getvirtualbox script & as soon as I heard it was finished.
It ran & completed fine. I installed new guest additions, but USB greyed out. I restarted guest, still no USB. I restarted host & all USB is working & much faster than with 3.18. Vbox intercepts the USB plugin before pclos so it is ready in a snap. (but a tradeoff of convenience there) well you can't have everything!

Comments on script: Checking internet connection, d/l speed, and progress bar are very nice touches! Also auto detected old Vbox version & removed it along with old guest additions. Excellent!

Big thanks to all!!

This sounds like a most valuable and thoughtful addition to the PClinuxOS armoury. Thanks to all concerned.

Is it worth giving it a little prominence, so that people know that the script exists? Perhaps a mention on the PCLOS website home page - and/or a sticky at the top of this board?

I tried the script last night with my WindowsXP VM (work-related) and it worked, giving me the ability to connect to my usb-printer. One more reason for my decision to stay with PCLOS.  Thanks to all involved.

Presumably, the main VirtualBox for pclos is still the OSE. This is only an alternative for those who need the PUEL version.

Or have I misunderstood?

I think everyone should switch to the PUEL version so Oracle can see all those wget downloads. Maybe they will change their minds about supporting PCLinuxOS.  >:(

Why would they need to now you've done it for them?

Catch 22, I think.

They said they dropped support because there wasn't enough downloads so now they will get the downloads.

I have a dozen installations and always used one d/l to upgrade all of them. With the ease of the script, and broadband, stressing the point is easy.  ;D

Hi Tex!

Why would they need to now you've done it for them?

Catch 22, I think.

They said they dropped support because there wasn't enough downloads so now they will get the downloads.

But they will see the downloads of the generic archive. How will they know the downloads are for PCLinuxOS?

I've installed getvirtualbox from the repo on several computers that didn't have VirtualBox on it, and when run, it ran flawlessly, installing VB with USB support -- kudos to all involved.

QUESTION though -- For a computer that already has VB OSE installed, does it need to be uninstalled via Synaptic BEFORE running the getvirtualbox routine?  ==>  think I just saw the answer to this question when I went to Synaptic to see what would be installed and uninstalled prior to actually applying the changes.  Looks like everything will be taken care of here.

ANOTHER QUESTION -- For subsequent upgrades in VB, will a new getvirtualbox rev come out.... similar to how GetOpenOffice works now?  Can we then just run it again, not having to uninstall the previous version?

Again, thanks to all involved.  What a great idea.

The idea is grand but how many of these will we have? GetOpenOffice, GetVirtualBox, Getwhatever. I prefer the single source method of synaptic.

Cheers.

But as there is no rpm package of Virtualbox its difficult to put it in Synaptic

Is it not possible to use the generic version?

Cheers.
