Help, lost my taskbar
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:41:11 PM »
I updated earlier this week and my taskbar started to look funny. The digital clock was centered, the icons on the left side were all on top of each other and the icons to the right were on the left side. I tried fixing it but lost my taskbar completely. How do I recover my taskbar and how can I restore a taskbar that has become corrupted in some way?

What desktop are you using? The procedure will vary.

I upgraded to KDE 4.4.4. I was able to get the taskbar back but not the same taskbar as before and I cannot change the color to the same color as the desktop. Now I have lost my desktop icons and the cashew symbol isn't available so I am stuck with the desktop. I think I will give up on KDE. How do I downgrade to 4.4.3?

If you had rather start over, here is a quote from Tex on the subject of "resetting" things back to the defaults.
BTW I think the thing you are referring to as the "taskbar" is called the "Panel".

"Quick way to restore the panel to default settings.

Open a konsole terminal
su to root
type cp /etc/skel/.kde4/share/config/plasma* /home/yourname/.kde4/share/config
type chown yourname:yourname /home/yourname/.kde4/share/config/*
type exit
type exit
logout and back in again
."

I don't know if this will fix you're desktop icons but that is a different topic.

Hope this helps. I fully understand what Tex is saying here so if you have questions about the proceedure, I will be happy to try and clear things up.  ;)

Someone reported to re-install kde4-config package would restore your desktop back to the default settings.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thanks Tex and Rudge,
I re-installed kde4-config and now my desktop and panel (What I was referring to as the taskbar) are back to normal. Why didn't I think of reinstalling? That's usually the first thing to do if you have problems with a program you installed in windows.
