sound available for only one user [SOLVED]
« on: June 06, 2010, 07:29:34 AM »
I have PCLOS 2010 installed on my computer but not updated after install. My problem is that sound works only for the user (not root) that was created at the time of install.  For all other users created later on, I get a pop-up  error message on login that sound does not work and kmix shows an empty window.

Please help.  thanks in advance

Hi Asok.

Try this. Go to KMenu > More applications > Configuration > Configure Your Computer

Then System tab and Manage Users on the system.

New window will come up right click on the user with the sound. Choose edit. Then go to Groups tab and make a note of the groups this user belongs to.

Now ok this window. Right click on any of the other users and check the groups he belongs to. Try making sure its the same as user with the sound working correctly. One of the groups will have the name of the user with sound working. Lets say user1. You can skip this. Its a user1 specific group. I think audio or sound group is what You need if You dont want to check all of them.

When You finish OK the window. Close user management. Close PCC. Reboot. Login to the edited user and check sound.

Hope this helps.

Andy

A Big thank you to AndrzejL, your clear instructions helped me solve the problem.
And I have marked the topic as SOLVED.
Great forum.  Great people.

Hi asok,

Are you holding off updating for a specific reason?

I have got only one system and I can't leave it unstable even for a single day.  If people report potential problems on upgrade,
I hold back.  I was about to update for KDE 4.4.4 but people repored problems, so I am still hesitant. I am waiting for a day when I will
be able to update without any potential problem.

regards
