[SOLVED] KDE4 session info not being saved
« on: June 06, 2010, 07:02:35 PM »
Trying out PCLinuxOS KDE since unhappy with Mandriva 2010.1...installed on two different Dell laptops...

So far seems nice other than a couple of X crashes on one laptop, but on neither laptop is the KDE session info being stored, so each time I logout or reboot, all my standard applications like konsole and konqueror that I always want open have to be restarted.  Very annoying!

I thought it might be some setting I had changed in KDE (as I changed many), but when I create a new user and make no configuration changes, I get the same behavior.  If I logout of KDE and use a console to rename ~/.kde4, when I log back into KDE (and a new ~/.kde4 is of course created), session info does get properly saved.  However, this base configuration is hideously ugly/unusable, and I hardly want to spend the time figuring out how to get it back to being usable.  Still, these experiments suggest that something in the default PCLinuxOS KDE4 user configuration is to blame.

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Check system settings - session manager - default is start with an empty session. Change to restore previous session.

if possible, put it SOLVED in the title of the thread
=> people who have the same problem can see it's solved,
and some other users doesn't spend their time at reading something already solved (many will do it, to get more knowledge (incl. me), but....  8) )

Thanks

hello and welcome to the forum!

"but on neither laptop is the KDE session info being stored, so each time I logout or reboot, all my standard applications like konsole and konqueror that I always want open have to be restarted.  Very annoying!"

there is a menu in kde control center/advanced user settings/autorun that allows you to add a list of apps that you want to be opened when you log into kde4

it is different to restore session and has some pros and cons, you could try both, but not simultaneously  :D

about the x crashes, can you post your system specs?  you could need a video card driver different than the one is being used now

also when the crash happens is important that you mention what apps were running and if you could recover by logging out and login in back, if you were using kde desktop effects or compiz

Both laptops have Nvidia graphics cards and appear to be using the correct (proprietary) Nvidia driver.  Just have not had enough time to play with this issue yet and was not asking for help on it until further investigation.  Have seen crashes only on one of the laptops, but have not tried using the other heavily.  X server crashes at random points (using KDE) and end up at KDM login window.  Using neither Compiz nor KDE effects.  Might be similar behavior to a Mandriva bug I just became aware of so will do some log checking: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=58605

Thanks for info.  Given the way I work, I always want session apps restored.  Just haven't had to fuss with changing that setting in many years, and not too familiar with navigating around KDE4 configuration software.  Have had KDE4 on only the two laptops I use lightly.  Main desktop machines continue to run KDE3 due to vastly superior stability as well as some features.  However I am beginning to run into more and more issues with old libraries making it difficult to update software, so currently investigating several KDE4 distros, as Mandriva 2010.0 was a complete disaster on the two laptops (still been running MDV 2009.1 on them).
