VLC lost shoutcast [SOLVED but you wont like it]
« on: June 07, 2010, 02:31:33 PM »
I have three versions of VLC on Linux and an XP box and all three lost shoutcast radio and tv playlist functionallity today.
Obviously this is a shoutcast issue. Just wondered if anyone could offer a heads up on the reason.?

Other apps such as amarok are unafected  ???  :-\

How do you have the player set up?

Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

As you can see the services discovery for shoutcast tv and radio no longer returns a playlist.

VLC versions 0.9.9 Linux - 1.0.5 windows and 1.0.5 Linux are affected. Tunapie and amarok are ok.

Loading a stream from favorites / web links still works. Just the playlist function seems borked.
Seems odd that three apps on three machines all fall over the same issue on the same day..

This is a major SNAFU.

As they say in Tux speak "it was ok yesterday !!".

Well, I had never tried this before. I set VLC to stream either/or Shoutcast audio/video. Unfortunately, I'm getting the same result. If the same thing is happening with the Windows version, I'd have to agree. It's either an issue with VLC, or something to do with the website. I wish I could offer more.

VLC Shoutcast support has been abondoned !!!!.

Seems like there was some irreconcilable politics between the VLC devs and Nullsoft.

What an absolute bummer... Linux has no off the shelf stand alone Shoutcast TV app any more  :(

Hopefully this wont last and things will get back to normal...

"The terms proposed by Nullsoft were not acceptable." Pretty non-descriptive. Maybe Shoutcast is pushing a DRM scheme, or something. Who knows yet?

Songbird has a Shoutcast radio add-on. But Songbird no longer supports Linux, does it? Double-bummer. You might look here http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-linux-music-players-replace-songbird/  to see if something else might work. Songbird has now been forked, but I don't remember the new project's name. Yodleing-cat maybe? Like I said, I never streamed Shoutcast broadcasts, so I don't know much about it. Hope you find something useful.

I know it's not exactly the best solution, but if you really like to use Shoutcast, you may want to try [wait! if your windowsphobia is severe, stop reading right here, the following non-OSS suggestion might cause irreversible damage] the following: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=5 . I haven't tried it myself (for some reason I can live without Shoutcast since I ported). Shoutcast radio still works in Amarok (just tried it some seconds ago).

"Shoutcast radio still works in Amarok (just tried it some seconds ago)."

it was added again as a extra modification, not official, it is just a script removed and added again(or maybe someone did a new one, not sure)

http://amarok.kde.org/en/releases/2.2/rc/1

amarok allows you to add modules and if you know what you are doing you can add the code removed again

My Amarok is 1.4.7, was always able to play Shoutcast, although searching with it is a bit mindnumbing. I think, however, that many radios offer alternative ways of streaming than Shoutcast, it's matter of checking their websites (provided they have, like Digitally Imported Radio). And for TV, that one is more complicated, perhaps JustinTV? But it's not very legal I think.

For the meanwhile I have found a site that provides an updated list of shoutcast tv listings. I have created a pls file of the stations I watch regularly and just load that into VLC. The actual streams are unaffected, it's just that VLC user agent seems to have been locked out from downloading the tv and radio playlists.

There is also Tunapie which still works. Be the end of the world without MST3K  lol ::)

Can you provide that site's url? Or do you suspect it's not going to be of the like of Shoutcast :D?
