Latest Update Problems - Solved
« on: June 05, 2010, 09:50:33 AM »
Running LXDE 2010 and the last (full - yesterday) update didn't kill my sys but It "aint right" either, I now have two Synaptic icons (two different ones in user and the 2009 icon and the new one in root so three in total) in the menu list, ran dupeclean, get nothing wrong and Synaptic still works. The LX Task Manager works but I like top better and when I try to run "top" now I get "TERM environment variable not set." when I try "htop" (yes I installed it) I get "Error opening terminal: unknown." , happens in both root and user. Aside from that everything else appears to be running normal.
Did something borky happen with the update? Any thoughts on how to fix it ?

I got a keyboard that only functions half correctly since the last time I updated a fresh install no more than a week ago. Oh, keyboard works quite well off second server via KVM switch.. so it's not the keyboard or switch..  OOPS!!   :o :o

Add these two line to your .bash_profile:

TERM=linux
export TERM

Now you can launch console programs.

Don't know about the keyboard issue. MC isn't usable atm.

I am assuming it is desktop related issue.  Can't see where it could be anything else.  I added a second language and out the winder it went... pffffffffttttttttt!!!

I have two Synaptic entries in the menu, too. The old icon and the new one. Just tried mc and it's working for me. Might try renaming or deleting your ~/.mc folder. Top and htop are also working normally.

Same problems here after updating my LXDE.  Extra synaptic icon and same error when attempting to run 'top'.

So should I not do the update and wait for a fix or will there even be a fix?

You truly can not believe that if there is a problem, that the developers would not fix it do you?

Well I did my part. I built the packages. I tested locally. I tested various installs in Virtualbox. I uploaded the packages to testing section. I posted an announcement on the testing mailing list. I waited a week for feedback. No reported issues. I moved packages from testing to updates.

Have a nice day,
Tex

P.S. If you would like to sign up and help test unsure packages before they go into updates.

Well from the above statement, it doesn't seem to be an "official" problem yet. But it does seem that several people have had an issue with the last update(there is another thread besides this one). So I think I will wait. Have you updated as of today ? and were there any issues for you?

Yes I did update several of my machine within the last 30 minutes.  The only thing I did was I did not update the file "initscripts"  I read somewhere else on the forum that it would update fine without that file.  I do not know if the initscripts files has been fixed or not. But I can tell you that the systems that I finished updating are not experiencing any issues, that have been described.   YMMV

None of my systems experienced any issues running a full update. Go figure.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

I did the update, including the initscripts, without any damage to the system. This was my prime suspect, after reading this thread, but the installation was already completed. On reboot ... nothing at all untoward happened. Boot was quick, login normal, and desktop as I last left it. Totally normal upgrade.
