Live CD hangs on Radeon Xpress 200M video-card
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:57:31 PM »
There is a big issue when trying to boot the LiveCD on a ATI Radeon Xpress 200M fitted box, such as my HP Compaq nx6325 laptop. Halfway the bootprocess, just before displaying the KDE4 GUI, it freezes completely on a black screen. Only a hard reset can get you out of it.
When booting in VESA mode, the same problem occurs but this time, the systems falls through to a console where you can try to fix the problem.

You have to log in as root, with the password root
Then running the 'drakconf' program, you can select the video option in the menu. You will notice that the video card is not recognized at all !!!. Select the ATI Radeon X1950 and earlier, save and close the program.
Back on the root prompt, type 'startx' and the Live CD boot process will continue.

I hope that this issue will be dealt with, as it is a famous showstopper for new users.

Works fine on my Acer laptop with the ATI Radeon Express 200m.  It loads and goes right to the desktop.

The HP Compaq nx6325 has always been a bit of a white elephant with regard to running Linux on it, although this 'No screens found' is a first for me.

I did some further testing and in default modus even sysrq REISUB did not succeeded.
Booting in Vesa mode allowed me to look in the logfiles and I copied the Xorg.0.log to my USB drive.

I add it here for the devs to look into as this is more their cup of tea than mine  8)

Please provide lspci -v and lspci -n and a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file so I can see what driver you are using and assign it based on the pci-id for your video card.

Thanks,
Tex

Texstar,

as requested the requested files.

Be advised it is a tar.gz file, but I had to rename it, due to the restrictions of the forum.

Txs,

Alain
