I have to add that I also struggled to burn with the native cd burner in Phoenix.  I installed something different and all was well - for the price of dependencies which I didn't want to have.

Maybe the problem lays there?

Maybe longtom. Maybe. But I've almost given up on getting any comprehensible pattern out of this. Out of all the machines I have, I'm now trying to establish on which one(s) can I burn discs which are readable on at least one of those on which the disk wasn't burned  ;D get it?? At least then I'll be reasonably certain that any disc I burn will be readable by others on their computers. It's not a solution to the problem - it's not even a workaround. It's just a cobble-together to get me past this tricky moment when I have people anxious to see a few hundred images of themselves and other members of their family. Maybe it's combination of burners that don't like certain burning software - or the other way about,  burner(s) that are going AWOL, along with general computer gremlins. I'll stick with this for another couple of days, but if I can get no further with it I shall abandon the thread. But thank you for your input. (What was it, by the way, that you downloaded - K3b?)

Yes, K3b it was.  I must admit, it yet has to fail on me.

Yes, I downloaded it in order to try and settle this thing at the weekend but even that - which I think is a brilliant burning program - didn't help. The only thing which seems to be almost sure is that if I use K3b on the machine running KDE4 then I think that's the safest. But even allowing for multiple varied problems on my machines  :o there still appears to me to be something amiss, probably in the lightweight DE area. But I guess only one of those devs would be able to offer any real guidance, and they aint around. If I continue to get no joy with this, I may re-open this thread on the xFce board.

The devs here are normally very hands on, I have to admit.

Since my Linux days (which is 16 months only)  I always had some or other problem with burning cds or dvds.  However, even so I don't use KDE but Gnome and Xfce/LXDE on lighter rigs, I always had to get K3b in order to make sure that a burn will not fail on me.  Maybe it is a fluke - but K3b so far has not let me down - not once.

I am following your tries and tribulation and feel the pain for you.  Something simple like that one just wants to work.  The erratic way of the errors you encounter doesn't help with the find for solutions.

I still believe - reading through it again - you are dealing with an hardware issue.  I will not commit to any further educated guesses so but wish you will find the culprit soon.

I agree with you about the possibility of a hardware issue. And to that end I removed earlier today the burner in the first machine which showed the problem at the weekend. It was quite an old one, and I've replaced it with an almost new one. But I've had enough of this problem at the moment - my brain's going into meltdown - need a day's break. I think what I shall do it later in the week when I've more time, I'll try and devise some sort of system whereby I can hopefully really analyse what's going on here. At the moment I'm mired in confusion.  ;D But thanks for your commiserations.
