If you are still using Alsa you could try switching to Pulse
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

I don't know what Alsa or what Pulse is, I just see in the Control Centre a PulseAlsa check and that always gets disabled and there is no sound.

I think there is a bug where the Pulse radio button doesn't stay "stuck"

I'm currently using PulseAudio and all I did was to install it from Synaptic and then restart my system and it was up and running (note, some other users have posted that this doesn't always work)

I usually just go to Configure Your Desktop >> Hardware >> Multimedia >
and check if it's switched from Alsa (see screenshot below)
