No sound anymore
« on: June 03, 2010, 02:58:21 PM »
I don't know when anymore, but since yesterday I noticed that there is no sound anymore on my system. I have shutdown windows on my other partition, and the volume is up.
What should I do?

A laptop...

What brand, and model?  What is the sound chipset?

I seem to have solved it through the Control Center, for whatever reason it was disabled there, strange, really strange,

I had something odd happen to one of my installs. I logged in and had no kmix icon in the system tray. I had to run alsaconf in su root mode and it popped back to life. Must have been a glitch in the matrix or something.

I have to say its strange, it happend again, no sound
when I go in the Control Center to re-enable it, it seems it does it, but when I close the wizard and try, there is no sound. I go again back in the Control Center and the Alsa mixer is again unchecked. Tryed this several times.
Could it be that my WinXP hibernated puts the sound card in a strange state?

I haven test it yet, but if it happe, ns because we hibernate windows, then maybe the sound card has got a kinda chip where it can be locked as "already in use" I knew things like this could happen with network cards, but sound card too..???

I have run alsaconf as texstar did and my sound was fixed, but on every shutdown my sound on kde does not work until i run alsaconf again. It all started after the last kde update on Friday. HP Pavilion dv6449us with nvidia chipset. Any suggestions?

Exactly the same thing on 2010.1 install, yesterday, after first reboot since the last upgrade. I'm running upgrades as they appear in update-notifier, set for 8 hr checks, using the PASS server.

No kmix icon in tray, but System Activity app showed it as running. Killed that and tried to restart kmix from a terminal. No errors reported, same symptoms. Killed kmix, in System Activity, ran alsaconf as root, then restarted kmix. Icon now appears in tray, all settings seem proper, and sound is restored.

The glitch in the matrix is infectious.  ;D

Alsa isn't starting properly. running service alsa restart in a terminal konsole in su root mode activates it. Looking into why.

I have my KDE sessions set to Restore previous session. Having done the correction, as stated, and in response to your post, I tried logging out, then back in. Here it gets interesting. I have never been able to do this successfully since installing 2010.1. After the log in screen, I've always gotten the first four icons, then the screen freezes, needing the REISUB combo to reboot, then log in successfully. For the first time, the log out/log in process completed, without a hiccup, and the sound settings stuck.

My desktop icons, however, were all moved to left side of the screen, arranged in three vertical rows.

How strange are the ways of the plasma world?

I will rearrange the icons, then try a complete reboot.
