LXDE Wallpaper slideshow
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:17:52 PM »
Hi,

I started using LXDE today - and it is so far the fastest DE of all PCLinuxOS Flavours I tested.  Very impressive indeed.

I added Exaile to my stuff and am listening to my favourite radio station from my old quarters.

Now - one thing I have always used - and loved dearly -  in KDE, Gnome, and XFCE was a wallpaper slideshow.  I just get a kick when I have a new wallpaper every 15 minutes or so - freshes up your desktop.

In KDE I used the in house feature, in Gnome Wally, in XFCE figured something out with crontab - but with LXDE I have't found anything yet which will achieve this.

I did install Wally - and it runs very nicely - just doesn't change any wallpaper.  hmmm ...

Any other ways I can achieve my little slideshow?  It is not a show stopper - but I really love that little feature.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Regards longtom

In LXDE PCManFM manages the desktop including the wallpaper. Open it, click Edit > Preferences > click Desktop tab > uncheck the Wallpaper mark. Now it no longer has control of your wallpaper. Try Wally again.
I've not tried this, but it should work.

Tried this - didn't do the trick.  Thanks for answering.  Not sure if I logged out and in - I'll do that.

Nope - no joy.  Just a black desktop - Wally runs nicely.  I get the feeling something in LXDE blocks it's access to the desktop.  If I get hold o that one ... >:(

I have the feeling I've forgotten something...............  ??? ??? ???

Hmm...... try this - open ~/.config/pcmanfm/ and open the 2 files there - main and main.lxde. You should see as the last section of main.lxde something like this:
Quote
[Desktop]
show_wallpaper=0
wallpaper=/usr/share/lxde/wallpapers/lxde_blue.jpg (or whichever wallpaper you've chosen)
wallpaper_mode=1
bg2=1644,46873,512
[Interface]

The file main may have the same entry or most likely looks like this:
Quote
[Desktop]
[Interface]

As a precaution, back up the 2 files by clicking File > Save As and adding a .old extension to the name. Close the files, then reopen them - not the copies. Remove the entries between [Desktop] and [Interface], save and exit. logout and login.

Thank you Neal.

No joy so.  However, there is something interesting:

Wally has a way to let you see the exif information of the wallpaper it shows.  I can see that exif info and it changes with the wallpaper - as it should.  However - I don't have a wallpaper ...

I am stumped ...

Edit:  Could even save the pic to somewhere else with Wally - just can't see it ... Really strange.

But boy - it is fast.  log in and log out happens in no time on this oldtimer ...

Another edit:
Quote
try this - open ~/.config/pcmanfm/ and open the 2 files there - main and main.lxde

I only found main.lxde, no main.  Don't no if this is important...

Another interesting fact is, that after a restart or re - log-in the lines (or some of them) are written back into main.lxde and the icon appears again on the desktop.  I can right click and de-select "Manage the Desktop and show file icons", but once I restart or re log-in the tick is back again and the icon on the desktop.

So I never get it right to have the section between [Desktop] and [Interface] empty.

Clues to the puzzle?

longtom,
Make the changes in /usr/share/lxde/pcmanfm/main.lxde, also.
