PCLOS 2010 Fails To Shutdown [ Solved ]
« on: June 03, 2010, 08:46:36 AM »
I have been using PCLOS 2010 for awhile and have been updating it regularly through Synaptic. On a recent update I have noticed that after clicking on Leave => Shutdown, it starts the process and then the PCLOS blue screen with logo appears and text at the bottom of the screen says " Shutting Down ". But the PC will not shutdown, I have to manually hold the power button down to power off the PC.  I have not recently updated my 2 laptops for the fear of them not shutting down either. Has anyone else been having this problem ?

Thanks

The only issue that I have had with shutdown is on my laptop  and the livecd from a flash drive, it goes to a point and says no processes left. Doesn't seem to do it from the LiveCD.

Have not had the problem from a HD install that is current with updates.

I have searched for an answer to this problem in the forum, but nothing seemed to work. Problem started after an update through Synaptic. Updated again today, and still problem exists. Still have to manually shutdown. Screen just hangs and says " Shutting Down " . Is there a solution to this problem that perhaps I missed ?  Can anyone help ?

Thanks

I know Gramps50's problem:

Is fixable:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,71045.msg583570.html#msg583570

So, I would put this to you (txm0523):
If you were to get a copy of the halt script:
Code: [Select]
/etc/init.d/haltfrom the Live CD, and run it (as root), does it shutdown your system?

During shutdown, if you press [ESC] (I believe that display verbose messages), where does it hang during shutdown?

Have tried all recommendations without success. Looks like a re-install is in my future here. Here we go again. Wish I knew why after updates your system goes down. Are update packages / files not checked before they get sent out to the repositories ?  Just curious.

Use Synaptic to force downgrade to acpid-2.0.3-1pclos2010.i586.rpm if you are having shutdown problems. To answer you question, we put unsure packages in the testing section and announce on the testers mailing list. Then after a while if there are no reports of problems we move those packages into updates.

Ive the same problem too w.r.t shutdown and reboot. Checked acpid version and it is acpid-2.0.3-1pclos2010 as per the suggestion.

However the shutdown/reboot works in a weird way. When i invoke either of them and if i don't touch the countdown timer (10 second) it does shutdown/reboot properly most of the time. However if i don't wait until countdown is over and instead clicks the popup it doesn't work, kind of nullifies what is intended to be done. Then i've to resort to root menu and issue a command line SD/RB.

One error message that comes when it doesn't work is -f No more processes in this run level

That means your bios is not honoring the acpi call to shutdown. You should try acpid-2.0.4-1pclos2010 and see if it helps your situation or not. Also sometime an updated kernel will fix a shutdown issue.

I was having shutdown problems as well and forced downgrade of acpid as per Tex and that fixed the problem. But then I thought of pags recommendation to press esc for verbose to see what was causing the hangup, so I upgraded back to 2.0.4-1 and shutdown again and I saw avahi daemon failed to terminate but before I could finish reading the message, my laptop shutdown. Go figure. I didn't get the failed to terminate message with acpid 2.0.3-1. Is the avahi daemon important? Should I downgrade again?
Thanks.

For the last few days, I have been having trouble with my system hanging on shut down.

An  error message occurred on shutdown when it was trying to unmount /home.

It turned out that it happened anytime that I had mounted shares using smd4k.

In smd4k, I went into settings > shares  and marked the box next to "unmount all personal shares on exit.

Now the system shuts down again.

This probably is not your problem but someone who has this problem in the future will probably read this thread.

Thanks Tex, will try. Btw how do i update kernel? I did mark all upgrades in synaptic but didn't list out anything on 2.6.32.12-bfs, so i still have 2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs.

Sorry to go off the topic a bit, but of late i can't use skype if i am using youtube or was using at some point. I can't hear/speak anything. The only way it works is to logout and login back again or reboot. Any idea how it can be resolved? Or could it be a pulse audio issue

Thanks.

After several days of trying to get the PC to shutdown I finally solved the problem. Sorry, but could not spend another 24 hours searching for fixes, trying all different recommendations and re-loading PCLOS ( several times ). I love PCLOS and have been using it for sevaral years, but can't do the headaches anymore. Will probably come back to PCLOS when someone finally figures out and fixes the problem in the software. Well, at least I still have PCLOS working on my laptop.

that's because the livecd is meant to drive from a CD, not from a flash drive.......
But in your syslinux.cfg (on your usb-stick), you can add
Code: [Select]
fromusb at the end of each line that starts with append
then it normally has to shut down properly when running PCLOS from usb-stick....  8)

No Linux install i have tried on an old 2nd PC fully powers off, as it is likely due to the particular BIOS. The processes stop, but the fan still runs. I am running Minime2009, and it has acpid-1.0.10-1pclos2009 installed, which is the latest available in Synaptic from the 2009 repo.
