I have searched Google and the forums for the answer to this without a clear answer. I had freq scaling working and after updating to newer kernels I cannot get it working again. I had my system set to 'ondemand' but cannot duplicate my efforts. Here's what I tried:

In a terminal I typed su to become root with password. Then I used
Code: [Select]
cpufreq-set --governor ondemand
That worked and I typed exit, then typed cpufreq-info to confirm it changed from performance to ondemand. However, it would not stick on reboot. What am I missing or not doing correctly? My laptop is running hot again and just needs ondemand enabled again to bring it down about 20 degrees C like before (worked fine till late last week). It's not working with 2.6.32.11, 2.6.33.4bfs or 2.6.33.5bfs so I am not sure what got borked.

Did you try setting them in the KDE Control Center  under Advanced User Settings --> Power Management

there is a kernel for optimized .a64 ,wich in my case keeps my processor running about 10c cooler.
tested on two machines one with a normal athlon64 single core, the other an 64x2.
just my .02c

I do have powernow installed on the machine. I had tried the a64 kernel and that's when the heat problem started for me. Previously I had been using the bfs kernels without issue, but after booting to the a64 (2.6.33.5a64) is when my fan running constantly and no scaling began. Could the booting of that kernel have changed my settings to performance and be blocking the changes to ondemand? Or should I be changing the settings elsewhere?

Late last night I went into KDE Control Center. I changed to conservative and just rebooted and went to bed. When I woke up and checked the machine it was running in performance mode with the fan still on high. Temp is steady above 60C, which is about 10-15C higher than before when I had it set to ondemand with the other kernels.

I did reboot into 2.6.33.4 but the performance setting was enabled for some reason. I then tried 2.6.32.11 and had the same result. Prior to trying the 2.6.33.5a64 kernel I had no heat issues so any help would be great. Should I just remove all the other kernels and stick with 2.6.33.4bfs since I had it working fine?

That worked and I typed exit, then typed cpufreq-info to confirm it changed from performance to ondemand. However, it would not stick on reboot.

Go to PCLOS Control Center / System / Manage System Services, and make sure cpufreq is running, and checked to start on boot.  I had the same problem, and that's what fixed it for me.

If you get the last suggestion to work, please check in the KDE (if you use that) Configure Your Desktop app under Advanced User Settings > Power Management and see if power management is supported. See my post in this section of the forum: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,77089.0.html I have 2x AMD 64. Power saving is working, but not showing as supported or configurable.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

Thanks everyone. I was able to install CPUFREQ-UTILITIES and configured to ondemand. My system runs nice and cool all the time now with only a bit of heat increase with Flash. That's normal and happens in all distros so not an issue. My temps are consistently 40-65C depending on what I am running. I did enable it the old fashioned way though instead of the GUI (that I didn't know about till after using a terminal) by doing:
