How to turn off wifi in LXDE?
« on: June 01, 2010, 08:48:14 AM »
I gather that they don't like you using laptops with wifi switched on in planes.

For my Dell 10v netbook I can turn it off in the bios, but is there an easier way in LXDE?

I tried this script:

but l couldn't make it work.  (maybe my inexperience - where should I save it?).

Does disabling the wlan in the PCC also turn off the transmitter?
How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

You may want to try to turn it off in PCC, and check if the transmitter is still on, or not. If it is still on, why not try to add the driver of your wifi card in the blacklist file ? (under /etc/modprobe.d/ directory there is a file named blacklist, you add the drivers you want to blacklist at the end, following the model you already have in it).

Melodie, I only want to be able to turn it off while I'm flying, and probably back on again when I'm waiting around in an airport - if it has free wifi.  What you suggest is no easier than switching it off in the BIOS - probably more complicated.

I'm not sure how I can check if the transmitter itself is working when the wlan is disabled in PCC?

Maybe something like iwconfig as root would do it ?

eth0      no wireless extensions.

I'm not sure on this one... let's wait for more advanced people to give more informations. :)
