(Solved) Losing sound setting
« on: May 29, 2010, 09:45:21 PM »
hello guys,
I have a Audigy creative sound blaster
PClinuxOS recognises it as shown and defaults to the details shown below.

Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (Creative Labs|CA0106 Soundblaster).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_ca0106" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_ca0106")

I have had sound before for DVD using SMplayer, but not at the moment
I do not have sound for the start up and close of the PC either.

A couple of times when setting up I have found a test function to check whether it worked but cannot find it at the moment.

When I do set it write for the DVD to work it forgets setting next time I boot up again.
any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris.m :)

you can open a terminal and as root run "alsaconf". then go to configure your desktop, computer administration, multimedia, highlight your sound card and test.
(make sure you haven't muted channels and the volume slider isn't set at zero level.)

You don't need to run as "root" in a terminal. Just bring up PCC(the blue and black circle icon) click on system, click on terminal, and type: alsaconf ...then highlight your sound chip and keep clicking yes and OK. when it's done type: exit. Then check check your mixer controls to make sure every thing is checked right.

Sounds like you may have installed 'pulseaudio' somewhere along the line. If you did just uninstall it and all your apps will default back to ALSA. Just merely installing 'pulseaudio' causes it to take over your system as the default sound server. More trouble than it's worth at this stage of development. That's why it's not included in PCLinuxOS by default.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

thanks for replys

I have tried the first suggestion then noticing the second suggestion I recall that I have ticked the box pulse audio while I was trying to get the sound working,

How do I uninstall pulse Audio?
I looked for it but I think it is part of another application or has a name that is different.

I am away most of the time that's why my use of the forum from this PC is a week apart, I have another PC in that I use when I am away and it does not have a sound card, it has something built into the mother board and does not have this problem of no sound.

How do I uninstall pulse Audio?

Start Synaptic. Click the Search button. Type pulseaudio in the search box. When the package appears, click the box to the left and select for removal. Click Apply.

Try this. In a terminal, type mplayer -ao alsa . Leave the terminal running and start smplayer and play a DVD. See if sound is working again. I don't know why your settings are lost after reboot.

Thanks for help, I did the terminal and alsa suggestion without any change in sound then used the screwdriver and spanner icon ( not the one with the blue circle) it has an option for multimedia settings that displays all the sound devices and allowed me to select my sound card for each playback type and it has a test function so i was sure that it was correct selection. after testing SMplayer which was OK, I shut down and when I turned back on and started up PClinuxOS it had the start up sound. Very pleased.
Thanks again
