How to install external DVD in LXDE
« on: May 28, 2010, 06:28:44 AM »
I just purchased an external DVD by ASUS and am trying to get it working properly in LXDE.  When plugged in via USB, it powers up and appears to mount properly.  If I put a DVD movie in, I can browse the files, but not play anything.  I have SMplayer and VLC installed, but I can't seem to get it to recognize that there is a standard DVD movie in there.  What's the trick?

Did you try "Open disk" in VLC (Media) ?

I think I tried "open media".  Is that the same?

Open media? Not even in my VLC menu, so I have to guess you mean "open disk" here. Obviously didn't work for you :(

Install lxde-halevt-additions. This will detect and automount the drive.

I'll try that, Neal.  Will that make it mount differently?  I guess my question is (I'm just trying to learn), what will that do that the current automount did not?

There are some things that PCManFM doesn't do. Opening and playing external media is one of those things. Installing lxde-halevt-additions will supply a set of scripts that will do this and other things; usb thumb drives, for example, will be automounted and PCManFM open automatically, rather than needing to be opened manually.

Not too early but I learned something reading this thread too, thank you  :)

any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

After I installed lxde-halevt-additions PCman pops up every time I plug something into a USB port, whether it's relevant or not - e.g. when I plug in  the printer.  If I plug in a flash disk I get three copies!  (This is one of those annoying gadgets that has a CD ROM emulation that I have not found out how to get rid of, as well as a usable chunk of memory. - two I could understand, but three????)
How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

Have a look at /etc/halevt/halevt.xml. Use your text editor. See if you can see anything that would cause that.

Thanks, I try that.  I should have noticed flux's sticky at the top earlier.
