I don't exactly get why they started the whole need for the "-" part of the "su" command. Seems to me it worked fine before, when you didn't need it.

I'm not sure, either. Only thing I've noticed is that su will put you as root user in the current directory. su - puts you in /root directory.

That's essentially the point. Using su gives you root permissions in your present location, whereas  su - actually makes you root, and puts you in the root environment also, as if you'd logged out and back in as root. Typing exit in either will bring you back to being your normal user.

Under File Tools, there is a Super User mode for Konqueror but none for Dolphin.
It would be very helpful if it is there as I prefer Dolphin to Konqueror.
Any workaround to add one?

You can simply switch your 'File Manager - Super User' from Konqueror to Dolphin in about 1 minute flat if that's what u want.

Right click 'Application Launcher' then click 'Menu Editor'
Click the + next to 'File Tools' then you will see 'Konqueror - Super User Mode' from the drop down list. Click on it.

In the 'General' tab rename everthing like so..

Name: Dolphin - Super User Mode
Description:
Comment:
Command: dolphin %i -caption "%c" "%u"

Then click the 'Advanced' tab
check 'Run as different user'

Close out of Menu Editor and click 'Save'

Many good options posted already. Just another one. Take your pick. That's what Linux is all about that for me.

And if you wanted to run as root for extended periods you can always go to:

Configure Your Desktop >> Personal  >> Default Applications >> File Manager >>

and select - Dolphin - Super User Mode

this will make your default FM root

Note: remember to switch back to "normal" use

Does anybody know why Dolphin has not been given the SuperUser mode option in the menu by default?
Is it considered to be inferior to Konqueror?
- SS.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

I like the new method of simply opening a Dolphin session, and right-clicking and using the Root Menu. How many times have you opened Konqueror, in the past, and found out you need root access to do something, which then required going through a lot more to get to the same place with either the "su -" method in a terminal, or launching it through a series of sub-menus from the Kmenu? Now, if I'm doing something, I simply use the Root Menu options in the right-click menu and launch it. Pretty simple if you ask me...

I honestly like Dolphin better than Konqueror.  Prior to KDE 4, Dolphin seemed less intuitive and powerful, but now I'm very happy with it.

I remember Konqueror having the same right click root menu options just like Dolphin.

Another thing I forgot to say is that right clicking a folder inside regular Dolphin and selecting open as root opens Konqueror super user and not Dolphin super user.

Konqueror and Dolphin were both available in super user mode menu in KDE4 under 2009. So I thought it might have been just an oversight that led to only Konqueror getting it by default.
Or may be there is some technical limitation which only our developers will be able to clarify.

Dolphin SU was dropped because people on this very forum said it did not work correctly. It also seem to be somewhat a  duplication to the do as root service menu.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Ok. Now that you mention it, I too remember having occasional problems with Dolphin in super user mode. Even though Dolphin was in super user mode, I was not able to edit fstab with editor. I could do that only under Konqueror as super user.

And FYI most distro's don't even have a 'do as root service menu' and the couple that do you must install from some community repository (if you even discover it in the repos which most people wouldn't unless they already knew about it).
Most distros if you want to do anything as root it must be done from the terminal.
So thanks again Tex for all the added extras and attention to detail that makes PCLOS heads & tails above the rest.

True. For the most part Linux, is Linux, is Linux. However, if you think of different distros as various flavors of cupcakes, in a world full of cupcakes, PCLinuxOS is a banana split with three syrup toppings, whipped cream, nuts, sprinkles, and three cherries on top.  ;D

Just a revisit to this thorny issue of
Dolphin running as root .....

I have tried all the suggestions in this thread and had various different problems, deciding in the end the only reliable method I have of running Dolphin in root mode is to do it via Konsole, by gaining root privileges and then typing
dbus-launch dolphin

Code: [Select]
[user@Dell ~]$ su
Password:
[root@Dell user]# dbus-launch dolphin
kdeinit4: Shutting down running client.

The worst of the problems I had was getting an error .......  but that left a Zonbie which was using up all the resources.

So far using the method above I have not hit any problems.

regards.

You should have problems if you're trying to access another directory that your user doesn't have permission for. You should use 'su -' instead of 'su'. That will grant you full permissions for all directories.
