Why no SuperUser mode for Dolphin?
« on: May 27, 2010, 09:16:12 PM »
Under File Tools, there is a Super User mode for Konqueror but none for Dolphin.
It would be very helpful if it is there as I prefer Dolphin to Konqueror.
Any workaround to add one?

In a terminal;      kdesu dolphin

You can use the menu editor to create new item in the appropriate place with Dolphin - Super User Mode as the Name: and the above as the command. Chose the appropriate icon, then save the file.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

when i work in dolphin, when i select a folder and do right click under actions i can find open as root

then it asks for root password and when you enter the password it opens the dolphin that you should see as root, it opens the folder

if it is a file that belongs to root, it will offer you to open or delete as root, very handy to delete the viruses in a usb device

i can't remember how this was on konqueror, maybe similar?

When you select Root menu >> Open as root = Konqueror as root opens.
But when select Open With >> Dolphin - Super user mode = Dolphin as root opens <-- sling-shot this is what you are probably looking for.

I have just  upgraded to PCLinuxOS 2010.1, and everything went well except that the grub entry for an older Linux OS I have retained as an option for multiple booting didn't work (although my residual Windows98 was dealt with correctly!).  I followed the suggestion for kdesu dolphin from this thread, and navigated in the resultant Dolphin to /boot/grub, but when I actually tried to open menu.lst with KWrite to correct the entry for the older Linux OS, the attempt failed, with the following error message:

Klauncher could not be reached via D-Bus. Error when calling start_service_by_desktop_path:
The name org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files

Any ideas, other than logging in as root?

Try as root -
Code: [Select]
dbus-launch kwrite /boot/grub/menu.list

First, you can do this: Fire up a terminal and type "su -" and follow that with your root password. Then, fire up Dolphin. The "-" part is something recent, and you need it to get permission for other volumes.

Second, you could just open Dolphin, then right-click on the folder you want to open as super user, and choose "Root menu->Open as root". You'll then get the dialog asking for the root password, and followed by a root session of Dolphin for that directory.

Thanks to ruel24 for the "su -" tip - it's what I had been missing, and I can now get Dolphin running with access to the /boot/grub files without having to log on as root.  Much safer all round!  :)

Glad to hear that solved your problem. I don't exactly get why they started the whole need for the "-" part of the "su" command. Seems to me it worked fine before, when you didn't need it.

Ha, since I have PCLOS my friends ask me to clean their USBs as Linux owns any other antivirus... what would poor Windows do without us? Lol. Eat that, Symantec!

Perhaps I skimmed too quickly through this thread but in MY case, I simply added another Dolphin icon to my Panel, right clicked on the icon, selected "icon settings" and when that opened, I went to the "application" tab, then opened the "advanced options" button, then under the "user" section, selected "run as a different user" and put "root" as the other user. I then went back and selected another icon for this so that I don't get it confused with the regular Dolphin icon. When I click on the new Dolphin (SU) icon I created, the root password box pops up and as soon as I enter the password, Dolphin opens with full root privileges.

Hope this helps someone out....

I'm not sure, either. Only thing I've noticed is that su will put you as root user in the current directory. su - puts you in /root directory.
