Upgrading mobo - must I reinstall fresh?

I know this question has been asked before but I swear I can't bring the right things up on the search - at least I know I have seen people ask about moving an install to another system.  Basically, the only thing that is going to change on mine is the mobo.  CPU, video card, RAM, PSU, optical drives are all coming.

I have a single 500 GB SATA with XP and PCLINUXOS. I know windows will get hosed so I am probably going to get rid of it and install 2010 on that partition and slowly migrate to it.  Sorry, but my forays in 2010 with KDE4 have been disastrous and I need to be able to keep working while I learn.  2009.2 is my main working install and I was going to try to do my best and keep it so I can remain functional while sorting out KDE4 - got any hints for me?  Data will be backed up to an external in case of disaster but if I could keep my apps/settings, etc.  until I move over to 2010 that would be wonderful.

FWIW - I am getting a new board because current one has a flaky USB front header and also the new board has ACC that might be able to unlock the second core on my CPU.  I figured for 50 bucks it might not be a bad move.

I have seen posts about going into services and see harddrake starts at boot and also going into config PC and having it redetect hardware from there.  What do you think would be best in this case?

I have no help. Just wanted to know if you went ahead and did it and if so how did it go.

Usually, that means no problem. Now, that said, some new ones use newer sound chips that may not be recognized. Other that the sound, I wouldn't forsee any problems.

I have one of the newest motherboards for AMD, and that's what happened to me. Fortunately, I was quite happy with my addon sound card, and decided to continue using it, one of the most important reasons was that the sound input worked fine, and that means I had no problems with my TV tuner.

isn' this teh same as setting harddrake?

anyaway, i once had to change a dead asus board for a asrock (the only available) and the only reinstall i had to make was - you guessed it - winzows...

You should be ok with hard drake.

On the other hand XP will have a heart attack with all of the dialog boxes popping up "new hardware found"

Moving in January of this year my teenage son just happened to drop a intel based computer on the ground and killed the poor thing. I pulled the HD's from it. Popped those into another AMD based box and after a short hiccup on boot, that quickly corrected itself, it ran fine and is still running fine. No biggy, no problem.

Just wanted you to know I have not attempted yet.  Had a relative's box that needed more urgent attention - and my new motherboard    I will post back if I do get a chance

I think I did something like this years ago in debian and didn't have to reinstall the linux - if you are thinking about it I wouldn't hesitate as long as you have backups.
