exFAT
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:21:38 AM »
I wonder if anyone is aware of the present state of drivers in Linux for exFAT?

exFAT is MS's extended FAT filesystem which is associated for me with such devices as SDXC cards.
It appears that most devices such as high end cameras which use & will use such cards will have this filesystem on board.

The latest info I have found is

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/1026144

so was wondering if this driver ......  even if read only ..... is to make it to the Linux kernel?

Maybe it already have and I don't realise it?

An experimental, open source Linux kernel module that supports the reading of exFAT files is currently under development[5], while a FUSE-based full-featured implementation is currently in beta status[6]. A closed source, read/write Linux driver, licensed and derived from the Microsoft exFAT driver, is available for purchase from Tuxera.[7]

I just wondering, don't we have some open alternatives suitable for such purposes?

Tuxera, the company formed by the NTFS-3G developers, has announced the availability of an exFAT driver for Android and other Linux systems....
...Microsoft holds patents on the proprietary file system and requires licensing fees for exFAT implementations.

Oh those patents.  >:(
I wonder what made Tuxera work with Microsoft.
