2010.1 Live CD system locks up while loading
« on: May 22, 2010, 07:50:04 PM »
The md5 checksum is good and the media check says it passed.

The system locks up while loading the 2010.1 live cd.  I thought it might be the video card, GeFore FX5200.  So I tried it in vesa mode.  This time it went a bit farther.  This time the splash screen came up but right after the hard drive icon appears is when the system locks up.  Mouse cursor freezes, hard drive lite on constant, and the cd drive lite flashing rapidly.

This is my desktop system which currently has 2007 on it.

ka9yhd:

Sounds like a kernel panic. Press the Esc key to see the boot messages, which will give some explanation as to why this is happening.

Where it is locking up it is already past the verbose mode.   After displaying the text, it will blank the screen and the graphics come up , kdm screen.

The last message displayed is "starting display manager"

The display blanks then a window for keyboard selection comes up.  US keyboard is highlighted, click "ok"
Display blanks then the KDM display comes up.  The hard drive icon shows then when the second icon starts to appear, the system locks up.

Does the disk work in other computers?

how's your cd/dvd rom unit?  ...maybe its dirty/malfunctioning?

...Your topic has happened to me also a few times, on different machines,  I'm still trying to figgure it out...But I have noticed you need patience with these live cd's...they seem to take a lot longer to "think"...maybe give it more time???

your friend ,

Hi,

On  my desktop, some flavors don't work either. Theses are the ones with bfs kernels. :(

The problem ka9yhd meets with looks strangely like the one I meet with. I had to put all my partitions upside down on my laptop to install Phoenix and E17 there in order to remaster them to french, as in my desktop it's just impossible : once the desktop is there (I can reach the desktop... ) the live (usb in my case) freezes immediatly. Nothing responds : no keyboard, nothing.

In the laptop I immediatly changed the kernel for the most recent non bfs one. (And started remastering).

On the desktop I installed Kde Minime for the same purpose.

Ok .  Neal did a remaster of it for me with the AMD 64 bit kernel from the repos, and it locks up in the same spot........... right after the hard drive icon appears on the KDM splash screen.

Next I tried "safe mode" and it is running........... I am using it now.

Hi,

Could you copy here the 2 blocks of text from /boot/grub/menu.lst : the standard boot text block, and the safe mode text block ?

Last night I burned a copy of 2010 Gnome and it loaded up without problems.  Also 2010 Openbox loads on this machine.

I am not sure what is up with this desktop system and KDE4.

Hi ka9yhd,

Have you tried with Minime as well ? What are the kernels on the systems that run ok and the kernel on the system that does not run ok ? and considering your old nvidia card, how does it go if you put  just "nv" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf "Driver" block text ?

I had the same problem with a Celeron system. Choosing 'safe kernel setting' (F6) + nosmp helped. Problem with single core CPU?

Well whatever was causing the problem with KDE freezing on this desktop system seems to have been fixed.
Today I installed KDE 4.5 with Synaptic using the command "task-kde4" and KDE loads just fine, I am using it now.
