I can only run it from the terminal in KDE..when I switch to Gnome it's there under software center, but not in KDE..only the "smart package" manager shows up
I don't like the smart package manager.

I had the exact same thing happen to me here is how I fixed it
Open a terminal Konsole - su to root and type apt-get update and apt-get install synaptic

make install --not war
