Are older Thinkpads allergic to KDE4? SOLVED
« on: May 21, 2010, 05:54:53 PM »
I just tried to install 2010.1 and Minime 2010 on my old thinkpad and in neither case would the LiveCD boot completely. At the end of the boot cycle the process would be interrupted by the error message:"The process for the desktop protocol died unexpectedly" and no desktop icon would display. This machine ran 2009.1 and Minime 2009 flawlessly. I finally managed to boot LXDE and installed that. Has anyone else seen that error message and knows how to interpret?

Thanks,
ebvt

"The process for the desktop protocol died unexpectedly"

I have seen that before with a KDE distro when the CD was burned at too high a speed. If you haven't done so already, try burning one at 4X speed, and see if that will correct it.

i was thinking the same, the cdrom drive

in a old thinkpad the old drive could be failing when loading big files

btw, system specs on that machine could be important, cpu, video card and ram, specially ram when loading kde4 from a livecd

Thanks guys, the Ram is 512 Mb, Itanium 1.3 Ghz processor. Since I don't feel putting much more money into this system, I would like to try burn-speed, but all my K3b seem to run at 8x min. Is there any way to change that?

You have LXDE installed? You can add KDE to that install with the package task-kde4.

Thanks, Neal, yes, LXDE is installed and I will try your suggestion. Just have to catch up on my updating which was interrupted yesterday by some dismal download speeds. I will report back later.

"I would like to try burn-speed, but all my K3b seem to run at 8x min. Is there any way to change that?"

no, if that is the slowest speed, that is the slowest speed

some drives can burn cd-rw at 4x or 2x but recently most drives will default to 10 since most cd-rw can do 4x or 10x

the cpu is enough but the problem here is the ram, another 512 mbs module can make the difference here

Thanks T6, just wanted to let everybody know that Neal's technique at least was a good workaround  for that desktop process warning. I now have KDE installed! I might change my mind on the memory once I find out how to open this beast which someone almost threw in the trash just because he had to have the latest Window$!

Thanks again everybody

Since its an old beast you might get lucky poking around in a computer tinkerer's workshop.

Besides that you might be able to get kde4 loaded straight from the live cd by using the vesa drivers.

Good luck tinkering.
