Updating Question...
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:12:18 AM »
I reload synaptic and then mark all updates.

However I see some packages that have been added in the package suggest forums not showing up in my synaptic. Like new Openal and Scribus 1.3.6 as an example.

Maybe they haven't yet been packaged and uploaded to the repo mirrors.

To add a bit more - the source files have to be downloaded, packaged, tested etc before they can be released to the mirrors.

They are really very fast (best I've ever seen)  but a lot would depend on just how many apps have been requested, how much is involved in checking dependencies.

Yea I guess that would make sense, but they said [added] before the name of the software, is it only added to 1 repository or all of them?

Another thing to consider is the repo you are using - they may not of synced to that mirror at that time.

I just checked Scribus (1.3.6.1) and I can see it - so possibly change repo (I'm using nluug.nl)

The apps are first added to the PASS server. After a day or two they get synced to ibiblio, from which all other mirrors sync, each on it's own schedule. When it's announced that a new, or updated package has been added, it should be on most, if not all, mirrors within a week.

If you let update-notifier do the checking for you, you'll have a good idea when your chosen repo last synced, by being notified that new upgrades have arrived. If the application you are interested in is new to you, and not yet installed, right after doing the upgrades would be a good time to see if that particular package has arrived at your mirror.

If you check the package listing from update-notifier, the first window displays the upgrades you need, the second window shows new packages that have arrived, that you do not have installed.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Additionally (particularly with regard to Scribus, at the moment), some packages may be in sections which have to be manually added, such as Testing (while the magazine crowd checks it out, to ensure it doesn't break their work-flow).

It's not recommended to add testing. Packages in there are untested and might break things.
