Compaq r3000 kernel question
« on: May 18, 2010, 05:41:40 PM »
While setting up two compaq r3000s with pclinuxos one has an p4 and the other has a AMD processor. The AMD boots much slower than the p4 and was wondering do I need to install another kernel and if so which one?

The AMD is an AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+

Which kernel are you using? This machine has an Athlon XP 2100+ and boots very fast with the 2.6.33.4-pclos1.bfs kernel.

kernel-2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs

I had lots of problems with the 2.6.32.X kernels on this machine. All the 2.6.33.x kernels have been both quick and stable. Try installing the newer one through Synaptic, and see if that doesn't help. Your present kernel will not be replaced, and will still be there if you wish to continue using it, after testing the newer one.

The first boot will be very slow, as all the dkms modules will have to be rebuilt for that kernel. Subsequent boots should be quite snappy.

Now is it the default kernel?

Should I update the kernel for the other laptop? It has a p4 and runs well but I see updated kernels for the x86 processors

There's quite a selection of kernels available. You could try others. You won't hurt anything, and there may be some surprises. We've had reports of people using the PAE kernel, that allows up to 64 GB RAM, on machines with 1-2 GB RAM and seeing noticeable speed improvements. The only way you'll know for sure, on any specific hardware, is to try each and compare.

I have one Amd machine now that I installed pclinuxos on had a lot of problems with 2.6.32.X kernels as well. I am using the 2.6.33.4 PAE kernel it seems to work alot faster on the amd machine then the BFS Kernels.

I'm currently using the 2.6.33.3-pclos1.bfs on this installation, and was going to upgrade to the 2.6.33.4 that I've installed on the other installations, so I'll give the PAE version a whirl on this one, instead of the bfs one, for a first hand trial. Thanks for the heads up.  :D
