Smplayer not working after upgrade
« on: May 18, 2010, 02:36:48 PM »
Has anybody else encountered this? I did an upgrade to the latest Xfce a few days ago and now my favourite movie player - which, to date, has played anything and everything I've thrown at it - i.e. SMplayer - won't play 90% of my movies. I've uninstalled it (and Mplayer of which I believe it's the front end) and re-installed and still nothing. It won't even start a movie. And there's nothing wrong with the movies, most of them avi's - gxine and VLC play them all with no problem. OK, so I don't need Smplayer, I hear you say. So I don't - but what's happening here? Has anybody else had the same thing?

Not sure I can help with this one, since it pulls in a bunch of qt4 stuff.  task-multimedia pulls in kde4 stuff.

Will google for an Xfce media player and see if that works.

OK, I just noticed that mplayer is installed by default.  I installed win32-codecs-all and libdvdcss and I played a .flv and a .mp4 so all I can say is, it's working for me.

Thank you Joble. I've already got win32-codecs-all installed, and libdvdcss2. The thing which puzzles me most of all is that in the previous version of Xfce smplayer was the player above all else that played whatever I threw at it. Now it will play - and this too is odd - only about in ten of my avi's. So there seems to be something about that other 90% which this version of smplayer is objecting to. What that might be I just haven't got the time to go into. And like I say, gxine - and VLC for that matter - plays all my avi's without a hitch. Odd.

Try deleting your /home/your-name-goes-here/.config/smplayer folder and see if that will reset it.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thank you for that Tex. But no joy.  One different thing it did do this time however after deleting that folder, was to tell me it couldn't identify the version of Mplayer I was using. It suggested one version. I clicked on OK - but then it went dead again. Two avi's it will open however is the Zefferelli/Mel Gibson 'Hamlet' and Jane Fonda/Roger Vadim 'Barbarella'. Interesting duo.

With SMPlayer open, go to Options > Preferences > General > Video and try changing the output driver to xv.

Then close and re-open SMPlayer and see if it will play the videos.

If it's already set to xv, try changing it to x11 instead.

Nope - tried both those (in fact it was already set to 'xv') and still exactly the same - nothing. But thank you anyway.

Thanks Joble. Yes, that thread's a help - in the sense that as DrDos says, if you start it in a terminal and put quotes around the filename it then plays the files it otherwise wouldn't. The rest of the discussion in the thread is inconclusive however. Trouble is, it's a long-winded way of launching anything when things like VLC and Gxine - so far at least - play anything I throw their way after a click on the menu or the filname. It's a shame - I used to feel I could rely totally on Smplayer. I hope whatever strange thing is causing it can be sorted.
