(Solved) BleachBit, any recommandation about using it
« on: May 18, 2010, 01:37:00 AM »
I was wondering about using BleachBit, is there any recommandation about how to use it, what not to do, things like that. I like to clean my system from time to time from files that are not in use anymore or log files so any information that you may have will help me understand a bit more about it.

Thanks  8)

1. Make sure not to delete your language and any other languages you may want to keep installed (do that by clicking 'Edit' then 'Preferences' then the 'Languages' tab)
2. Don't check 'Places' in the Firefox section (that will delete your bookmarks)
3. Checking 'Vacuum' in Firefox may cause you to notice a performance increase
4. If you check "Overwrite files" or "Free disk space" it will take a lot longer to complete and is really unnecessary for normal maintenance. It will also shorten the life of your hard drive over the long run technically speaking.
5. In the 'System' section I choose to delete 'Rotated Logs' because they are old + I personally don't ever use them

If you are worried about screwing up your computer just don't run Bleachbit as root and it won't be able to delete anything which might be important in your root partition.
Also you can choose to hide irrelevant cleaners in the 'Preferences' so you don't have to weed through stuff which cleans apps you don't have installed.
Rule of thumb: If your not sure just don't check it. I've been using Linux for many years before Bleachbit even existed and everything worked just fine without it.
It's more the Windows mentality that you gotta keep cleaning, maintaining, scanning your computer. The beauty of Linux is you really don't have to unless you want to generally speaking.
Once you have checked everything you want to clean do a dry run by clicking 'Preview' this will simulate the actions to be performed and tell you everything to be deleted and how much space you will gain back on your hard drive. So then you can make sure you're not about to delete something you don't wan't to.
Well that's it from me. I'm sure others will chime in with some good advice as well.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Thank you 4evergr8ful (like your name), this is what i was looking for.

I agree that the cleaning process is coming from Windows, been using it for ages :) but i was looking at my Linux partitions and it seems that they are not too big. I don't know how big or how much space Linux is taking let say if you use it for a normal usage for a long time and in the same time i just want to make sure that there is no traces of what i'm doing (paranoia coming from Windows again) because i don't know what is stored on my computer when i'm using PCLinux.

I think 4evergr8ful has given you very good advice.

The only thing I would add is if you remaster your system its a good idea to clean your system and then you'll have a smaller and neater iso to use.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver
