Distribution Release - KDE4: FullMonty DVD edition
« on: May 17, 2010, 09:31:15 AM »
Dear friends,

First of all a big THANK YOU to all providing feedback, the final KDE FullMonty (FM) edition 2013.04 is now available.

You can download the FullMonty-iso directly from the following locations.
Please use a download manager with multi-thread and resume capability, like filezilla, wxdfast, krusader, etc.!

FullMonty iso file-size: 4037 MB, md5sum: 257b94dd54440254a68e69c077f4ac31
List of the 3198 installed packages

There are two versions of FullMonty:
====================================
1) Questions issues concerning the installation/maintenance of the FullMonty DVD-edition should be posted here.
Please also visit this thread for post-installation tips & tricks.

2) A FullMonty lightweight version is also available in Synaptic, more info and discussion on this version can be found here.

Important Notes:
================
1) Users with NVidia cards: the liveDVD should load the correct Nvidia driver. Should you be dropped to a cmd-line, please login as guest with password guest and then enter: startx.
2) Depending on your audio-card you may need to: right-click the speaker-icon in the panel, Select Master Channel..., and set it to PCM instead of Master, and also increase the volume of that channel, or just raise the level of both, Master and PCM.
3) Desktop effects : FullMonty is a customized KDE installation. The installation of Compiz is blocked because it is incompatible with the FullMonty desktop. Use the KDE desktop effects instead.

What is KDE-FullMonty?
=====================
KDE FullMonty = regular PCLinuxOS KDE installation + special desktop layout + many applications & drivers preinstalled.
FM applies a new concept: activity-focused virtual desktop layout, which is designed to address typical user-needs/tasks, make their life easy, and working on the computer straightforward and fun. So, what does the typical user do with a computer?
1) check email/internet/chat/IM? Goto desktop 1 and you find all you need directly on the desktop.
2) office work to do? Goto desktop 2 where you will find LibreOffice, kile, scribus, etc...
3) want to play a quick game? Goto desktop 3 and relax with a quick game
4) listen to or convert music, watch/make DVDs, etc? Goto desktop 4 for any multimedia task
5) working with images/photos? Goto desktop 5 to scan, post-process, draw, etc.
6) system info/administration/configuration? All on desktop 6.
Just click the desktop for your activity and start working in a dedicated environment....

The idea of the FM concept is to provide the best out-of-the-box experience in an intuitive, thematically organized desktop setup. FM is designed for Linux beginners and newcomers from other operating system, while Linux geeks may find this edition bloated. The typical user is provided with a cream of the crop selection of activity-related applications available in PCLinuxOS. The most popular ones are easily accessible from the respective virtual desktop and many more applications can be accessed from the PCmenu. The variety of applications in FM serves several purposes: advertising these great applications to the users; stimulate the comparative usage of these applications in the forum, learning about and discussing specific application features, and finally helping deciding on and providing constructive feedback on finding the most popular application for a given task. FM should facilitate the entry into the Linux desktop experience, provide an intuitive and easy to use working environment, and ultimately promote the best Linux distribution to the first place of the charts!  ;)

The following 4 FullMonty-specific programs have been added to manage the FM-setup:
=======================================================
1) fm_switcher: run this tool to switch between the FM desktop layout and the default PCLinuxOS KDE desktop layout. The selected desktop layout will then be applied to any new user on the system. If you like the FM-layout then you do not need this tool at all. But, if you wanted, you could use this tool to setup some user accounts with the FM-desktop and some other accounts with the default PCLinuxOS KDE layout. Or you choose to not use the FM-layout at all, then you can use this tool to revert to the standard PCLinuxOS KDE layout which will then give you a normal PCLinuxOS KDE installation, just with many more applications. Btw, the root account is always set to have the default PCLinuxOS KDE layout.

2) fm_checkwidgets: this tool is started automatically upon first login to a new FM user account and it deletes itself once it has done its job. The purpose of this tool is to detect the current screen-resolution and if necessary apply a respective plasma config-file to fit the FM desktop to a given screen-resolution.

3) fm_setwidgets: this tool has two purposes:
a) it permits to define one of the 6 FM-virtual desktops to be shown upon login to your user account.
b) it will detect the current screen-resolution and offer a set of pre-configured plasma config-files for 12 typical screen-resolutions. Run this tool if you
- changed your screen-resolution and need to remap the FM desktop layout to the new screen resolution, or
- messed up your FM desktop layout (<=> plasma config-file) and then want to restore a pre-defined FM-desktop.
- have a different screen-resolution or want to personalize your current desktop layout: scroll down and unlock your current layout so you can modify it to your liking.

4) fm_info: this tool will provide basic information about your FullMonty-installation and open a browser to display the updated info of this thread.

KDE4-FullMonty features:
=====================
* kernel 3.2.18 bfs, KDE 4.10.1, added many apps, and fully updated
* all kind of drivers/applications to deal with any kind of external hardware like cell-phones, scanner, printer, webcam, TV, Bluetooth, IPod, radio, etc.
* 6 activity-focused virtual desktop layout, each with task-related desktop launchers of popular applications. Independent of the selected virtual desktop, any application can be accessed from the PCmenu.
* customized fixes for wine and other applications; customized toolbar layout for konqueror, dolphin, and kwrite.
* suggested minimum HW-requirements: 1 GB RAM, 20 GB harddisk, (3D-graphic card - not mandatory but strongly recommended).

Remarks:
==============
1) The desktop layout with the plasma-widgets is designed for a screen resolution of 1024x768. For a different screen-resolution and upon first login to a user-account, the widgets positions are automatically remapped to the actual screen resolution. You should get a respective message and the plasma-desktop is then re-started to have the widgets positioned properly on your desktop. This step will only happen once. In case you change the screen-resolution afterwards you can click on Fullmonty Widgets Setup in the upper right of desktop 6 (or PCmenu -> FullMonty Tools -> Fullmonty Widgets Setup) to re-map the widget layout to the new screen-resolution.
2) the script fm_switcher (or PCmenu -> FullMonty Tools -> Fullmonty/Default Layout Switcher)  allows to switch between the FullMonty and the default KDE4 layout which will be applied for any new user setup after running this script. With this script you could setup some users to have the FullMonty layout and some other users to have the default KDE4 layout, all on the same system.
3) Important: during HD-installation you must choose "custom disk partitioning" and create a (/)-partition of at least 20 GB and a Swap partition of at least 1 GB or 2GB.
4) by default, the FullMonty-layout is only applied to non-root accounts.
5) libdvdcss2 is not included but you can easily add this yourself later by installing it through Synaptic
6) users with 3D graphic cards (NVidia, ATI) should note the following:
a) Compiz has been blocked and can not be installed because it is not compatible with the FullMonty desktop layout! By default, desktop effects are disabled, you can enable them in PCmenu -> More Applications -> Configuration -> Configure Your Desktop -> Look & Feel -> Desktop Effects.
b) GoogleEarth and some games require a 3D capable graphic card, all drivers are already available.

have fun!

3. start kmldonkey
Now you can use kmldonkey but no more ktorrent. To use torrent you must first quit kmldonkey, stop mldonkey service in PCC, and then start ktorrent.
