Pidgin 2.7.* - gtalk sasl2
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:24:25 PM »
thought I'd mention this in case anyone else experienced same issues.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
prior too "pidgin 2.6.*"  sasl2 plugins were not used so google-talk(gtalk) worked without issues.
"pidgin 2.7.0" now uses as far as i could tell the sasl2 login plugin and maybe a few others.

so with that all said:
$ su -
#(root password)

$ apt-get install -y --force-yes cyrus-sasl libsasl2-plug-*

and presto pidgin 2.7.0 google-talk(gtalk) works again.

further information on setting up the account is as follows:
Accounts > add or modify > xmpp or googletalk
Username: your account name
Domain: gmail.com
Resource: Home
Password: your password

click Advanced Tab:
  • Require SSL/TLS
  • Force old (port 5223) SSL

[  ] Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams
Connect port: 443
Connect server: talk.google.com
File transfer proxies: proxy.eu.jabber.org

click save and you now have google-talk(Gtalk)

Without creating another topic, I had an issue with pidgin. When I'm being idle, away button appeared, everything's ok, but when I'm back to my pc, the away button still remains.

Rokixz not sure if it was intentional in design or not but it does remain idle until you send a message to someone.
for myself I prefer this method because often i am quite busy between the pc and other duties, which would change the status "idle", "here", "idle", "here".

I posted about it in another topic.
For me I found a workaround in using pidgin 2.6.4
Installed it from the PCLOS package from the 2009.2 release :-)
By extracting the package and replacing the files yourself, the packaging system still thinks 2.7.0 is installed, so you wont be bothered with unnecessary updates :-)
Read about it in http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,71683.0.html
