Have followed your advice.

Revhead, a partial answer to your original question: Synaptic>Edit>Fix broken packages. I understand you don't want to risk breaking what is already working. If Fix BP (and doesn't everyone wish we could do THAT?) causes your printer not to work, you can always reinstall those two files, against advice you've already ignored anyway. The standard PCLOS caution is that at some point some update might cause a dependency failure with files installed from outside of PCLOS. It might make your printer stop working then, or might cascade so that nothing works. That is why outside files are discouraged and the Package Suggest method is the way to go. No one should be asked to help you fix a system when they don't know what you've put on it and might not be familiar with the program once you tell them.

It seems that listing it as broken is an annoyance, but doesn't interfere with printing. Since the printer is working and you don't want to break it with a FBP, you might just ignore the one broken package yourself. I don't know if there's a way to get Synaptic to do it. You'd think there would be a way, but who knows? My guess is Synaptic will Fix the Broken Package, take it off the list, and continue to run your printer for you.

Texstar:
Open Konsole terminal
su to root
type rpm -e --justdb name-of-rpm.

This will leave the package installed but it will be hidden from Synaptic.

Thankyou so much Texstar. That seems to have done the trick. Synaptic is now reporting no broken packages.
