SOLVED Programs won't start in 2010.1
« on: May 14, 2010, 04:32:48 PM »
I recently installed PCLOS2010.1 and everything seemed fine, at least initially.  After logging in as user, my biggest problem is that when I start programs like OpenOffice, they will start the first time.  If I close the program and attempt to restart, nothing happens.  Also, the program icon does not appear in the panel at the bottom of the screen at any time, so the only way I can tell if the program is running is if the window is displayed.  At one point, I must have accidentally minimized the window and it went to never-never land.  The only thing that seems to resolve this is if I do a complete shutdown and restart of the system.  I have problems with the panel that I asked about in an earlier post.  The suggestions provided there helped somewhat, but not completely.

Just as a test, I logged on as root and the whole situation is different.  The programs start, the icons go to the panel.  In fact, the whole display is different for root than for user.  The panel is legible, a default set of icons are at the left of the panel for things like Dolphin, etc.  I realize that the displays can be different for each user, but I guess I would have expected that I could at least duplicate the settings from root to user.  I seems that I cannot do that.

I have read a few comments in this forum about installing 2010.1 and reformatting the home partition in the process.  The actual need for that seems a bit unclear from the posts I read.  When I installed, I did NOT reformat the home partition.  Could this be causing my problems?

If not, does someone have some suggestions on how to solve them?

Thanks.

Yes the old /home COULD be causing problems.

A simple solution I think would be to create a new user and see how that looks.

It should have the defaults.

Alternatively you could rename the old KDE directory and have the system create a new one for your existing user, which again should have a default setup.

Thanks for the reply.  Adding a new user did have the defaults.  I guess I will go back and reformat home since I have a full backup available anyway.

There is no need ........  just rename or delete the .KDE4 (hidden folder) directory for the user you wish to go back to defaults and it will be recreated at next loging.
