[Samsung N210] USB no more detected (just after install)
« on: May 07, 2010, 06:01:11 PM »
Hi, I installed pclinuxos openbox on this netbook: I attached "netbook-lshw.txt" to present it.

I updated, configured, then it appears there is no more usb detection : the usb mouse does not move, nor does the usb keyboard, or the pendrive is not seen. The content of a "lsusb" started as root comes back empty.

There is another distro too, where all works. So I rebooted to the Live usbkey from where I had installed, and there, no problem, everything works.

This is the list of stuff I have installed: it's the "apt-list.txt" file I attached.

All is in there : apps, games, system updates, an additional kernel I tried and rebooted to, just incase. The original one is the 2.6.33, and really in usbkey as live, no problem, I can do everything with the mouse, starting from choosing the default keyboard at the end of the boot.

I haven't tried to update other places yes, and check, such as in the desktop.

If someone would have any clue ? Thanks.

I had this problem last night with a usb drive not being detected or mounted.  I have several kernels installed so I rebooted to another one and it worked.  Oddly enough when I rebooted back to the default kernel, it worked again.  Have you rebooted?

Hi Jobble, sure I rebooted.

I could not paste the content of the files, because they were too large : the list of updates include 2 udev packages, one udev, and one looks like a lib related to udev. So I have 2 questions about that : could it be related to udev ? And am I the only one who meets with this problem ?

Thanks.

PS: ehci-hcd and uhcd-hcd are both loaded, but they are used by : nothing (0 in the column) and lsusb invoked as root returns nothing. The usb connectors don't get any power supply. (The mouse and the usb keys don't light up)

PS 2: I found some commands with udev :

as root, the command "udevadm test" returns back:
run_command: calling: test
udevadm_test: version 153 //this is the newest udev updated to
syspath parameter missing //could this show something going wrong about the way udev works ?

I should also say that I tried to configure the mouse and usb devices in the PCC, in hardware, in mouse, tried to review the services activated, and did not progress on this side. The PCC configures a mouse, quits silently, and it is still not working.

Hi again,

I the live version where all works well, the udev version is udev-151-2pclos2010 ; libgudev1.0_0-151-2pclos2010 ; libudev0-151-2pclos2010

and libusb-compat0.1_4-0.1.3-1pclos2010 in both.

I just noticed that udev packages are not in the mirrors anymore ?! Only udev-extras-0.0.1-1.i586.rpm is still there. (but udev-151 obsoletes udev-extra)

here:
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.main/

here:
http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.main/

and here as well:
http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.main/

I continue to search and I'll be back.

I rebooted to pclinuxos openbox on my desktop, and there all works fine, and the udev packages are the latest, 153 as well.
Quote
# uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.33.2-pclos1.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Apr 3 12:51:39 CDT 2010 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GNU/Linux

I have got theses to upgrade:
Quote
drakx-finish-install drakxtools drakxtools-backend drakxtools-newt
  gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-flac gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-soup gstreamer0.10-tools harddrake
  harddrake-ui libgstbasevideo0.10_0 libgstphotography0.10_0
  libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10 libgstreamer0.10_0.10 libpangomm2.4_1

I'll upgrade them now, reboot and see if all still works well ?

I tried all theses kernels:
Quote
2.6.33.2-pclos1.bfs
2.6.33.3-pclos1
2.6.33.3-pclos1.bfs
2.6.32.12-pclos1
2.6.32.12-pclos1.bfs

I posted the content of the Synaptic logs here : http://meets.free.fr/files/log.tar.bz2
incase that can help someone to help me.

had Hootiegibbon try to help me at the pclinuxos-support chan, who told me to invoke theses commands:

Quote
[root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep usb
[root@localhost ~]#  snd_usb_lib            13234  0
[root@localhost ~]#  snd_rawmidi            16125  1 snd_usb_lib
[root@localhost ~]#  usbcore               121303  4 snd_usb_lib,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

and theses:
Quote
[root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep usb_storage
[root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep hid
[root@localhost ~]#

Quote
check if dynamic is installed
<melodie_> yes it's installed : 0.26.14-1pclos2007

Quote
# modprobe usb_storage && modprobe hid && modprobe usbhid && depmod -a

Then restarted X and
Quote
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe usbcore && depmod -a

I had done a dmesg after one of the reboots:
http://www.pclinuxos.pastebin.com/cgwi7ne0

Now I'm doing a new install on another partition. I will still be able to boot to that one for any additional test, and will have a new fresh install from USB live where the USB is perfectly seen to see exactly what happens after install.

Thanks if somenone has any new ideas about this usb connectors not seen ?

Ok, so after a brand new install on the netbook the usb is not seen anymore ?

What the ?  ???

I attach a dmesg invoked just after boot... what else could be useful ?

/I edited the title to better reflect how the problem goes

Hi,

I have done a full update of the pclinuxos openbox "factory machine" : the one from where I pulled the remasters. I installed the 2.6.33.3-pclos1 kernel. It's now being remastering.

Maybe the new hardrake or new initscripts... will improve the USB detection in that Netbook ?

The weird part is as live USB works, once installed, it doesn't function anymore !   ??? ??? ???

Hi,

Remastering a new iso and installing it didn't help. I still recognize the USB while in live mode, and not anymore after install.

Next I will try with the last kde 2010-1 iso.

The lsub in the live gives this:

Hi,

With the latest KDE 2010-1 the problem is exactly the same. There is nothing I know of that I can do. :(
