Missing sasl libs with IM clients Pidgin and Empathy
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:29:37 PM »
Hi Folks,
Yesterday I upgraded Pidgin to 2.7.0 from repo's and as a result I couldnt get any connection with XMPP servers any more (googletalk, hyves.nl) >:(
Tried Empathy hoping that it would get me connected but no results.
As a matter of fact I was having troubles with hyves.nl (XMPP for dutch facebook alike website) since PCLOS 2010. My system with PCLOS 2009 was working very well with hyves.nl.
But after an hour debugging Pidgin I found that I was missing some sasl libs (libsasl2-plug-anything) and after installing all of them from symantec Pidgin is connecting again!
@Devs: Perhaps there is missing a dependency to libsasl2-etc...?
Hoping this helps some folks with connecting troubles!  :)
Regards,
Gerben

I guess you call "clean" when I did nothing between install and the post to the forum  ;D? No...
As a matter of fact I installed 2010 a few weeks ago, and spend lots of hours getting pidgin to work with all my connections, trying different things.
No I have it connected finally to all of them. Only one thing left: Pidgin sets his status to "away" after 5 mins of idletime, and never turns back to "online"... I guess Ill have to reinstall Pidgin 2.6.4 to get this one working...
Hope this helps. Now I have working pidgin XMPP connections I don't think of reinstalling PCLOS....
Regards,
Gerben

What I was trying to say (badly  ;) ) is when you installed the new 2010 iso, did you format your /home partition or are you re-using your old 2009 one?

If thats the point: I haven't reused anything  :D
Made a "clean" reinstall with only a root partition and used it to change to ext4  ;)
So the /home is totally new :D

I found with a search "sasl libs" in Synaptic, they are all installed. Check your install.

Of course they are all installed now... :D. Id did it myself yesterday. Before they were not, except for "libsasl2". Ill check my other computer later today where I did only the installation proces of 2010, and nothing else.

OK. tried on another system, fresh 2010.1 KDE install.
After install only updated with synaptic.
Check with Pidgin -> Googletalk works, but hyves.nl not.
Check Synaptic for sasl -> only "libsasl2" installed, no plugins for libsasl.
Installed all available plugins -> hyves.nl connected with pidgin  :)
Little confused for now. I thougt XMPP is XMPP, but I gues its not  :(
For any dutch "kwekker" lovers @ hyves.nl: You need the libsasl plugins to connect  :)

For now as Pidgin keeps moving to "away" Im thinking of switching to empathy for IM. Only have to figure out why my MSN and hyves.nl are not connecting....
Can't be the sasl thing any more  :D
