Does Pc Linux 2010.1 ISO fit on a CD-R?
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:21:17 PM »
I downloaded the PCLOS 2010 ISO, but having a problem getting it to burn to a CD-R, It seems like it might be a space issue.  Will the extracted ISO fit on a CD-R? (700MB)?

I tried extracting it using Nero in Windows, and tried it on K3B in PCLOS 2007, both CD's have the same result.  They seem to fail before the burn is complete. Is it because it wont fit, or just a bad download?

Thanks
Rick

Just for clarification, you didn't try to extract anything, correct?  You just burn the image as is.

Oh yea,, and welcome to the forum.  ;D ;D

rickhunt,

Oops, hit the wrong key and posted before I said anything.

Anyway, just so that you do not think that the first two responders were avoiding your question, the answer is that PCLOS 2010.1 definitely fits on a CD.

I am typing this from the live CD with no problems at all.

i tried to burn 2010 into a cdr and both k3b and bracero(or whatever its called) said the image was too big to fit into the cd. I dont remember which one i ended up using but the image was burned with a cd-r from a different company. Try another brand of cd-r if you have any

Optical burner drives today present a situation  very much like what we had with five inch and three and a half inch floppy media and drives in the late seventies and early eighties. You never knew which brand of media was going to work with which drive or which drive would read disks written by which other drive.

They are all supposed to be following standards that ensure compatibility. Unfortunately, in the real world it does not always work that way.

Some drives just do not like some disks.

I realized after I posted earlier that I was not using the CD-R media that I thought I was.
It was not marked as to what it was.

Just to be certain that I was not leading you astray, I burned a new disk on Sony CD-RW  700 MB media.

I am now running on that disk. So, the answer is still yes, the released ISO of kde-2010.1 is not too large for this size disk.

Now, just to qualify that, I burned this disk from an install of PCLOS kde-2010.1 fully updated using k3b.

I burned it at the default settings using a brand new LG drive at 4x speed.

I used the default mode which was Session At Once (SAO).

I remember that the last time I was experimenting to find out which of my machines would reliably write consistently, that one of the modes that can be set on k3b resulted in needing more space than these disks were capable of.

So, you might want to check and see what settings are being used by your burner.

Also, I have standardized on using a particular drive in an external enclosure while always using the same brand of disks when I am trying to burn a disk for a new distribution. It just eliminates a lot of variables. Also, I always keep an ISO file that I have successfully burned on my machines so that when I run into the type of problem that you are seeing, I can burn that known to work file in order to make certain that I do not now have hardware problems.

This becomes very important when you start doing remasters.

For what it is worth, I have found that at least two of my drives behave differently with different room temperatures.

If your computer is in a rather warm area, try shutting it down and then doing a test burn when the machine is cooler.

Thanks for all the replies, I think it is a bad download.  The Md5 Checksum is not correct.  Gonna try and download it again.

Oh and yes, I am burning the ISO image not extracting it...LOL I realized a while after I posted that, I didn't use the correct choice of words. :-)

One word of caution to others who might be reading in on this thread. the ISO will fit on a CD-R but not on a CD-RW they only give 650Mb of space as apposed to 700MB on a CD-R.

My cd-rw is 700mb. When purchasing any media, it is a good idea to check its capacity as well as its speed.

Ok, well, I am up and running, I was able to make a bootable USB drive using Unetbootin, however, I might still re download the ISO. When the Unetbootin menu loaded the first time, there were some odd characters in there and the text was slightly scrambled on a few lines, but I chose default and it loaded PCLOS 2010.  So far I like it, even running from the flash drive, it seems rather quick and responsive.

It did detect my Sprint broadband card, however, the path wasn't correct.

I was please to see 2010 still had KPPP, because I know how to manually configure my card using KPPP.

I am using a broadband card on a desktop using a PCI to PCMCIA adapter, it works well as long as I can set the path to dev/tty/ACM0.

Ok, just wanted to say it was working, im back to playing with it a little bit.  Im like a kid in a candy store. LOL

Pleased you are at least able to see and use the OS

You may want to try a different download site - the following are Europe based:

ftp.heanet.ie
ftp.nluug.nl
ftp.surfnet.nl
ftp.klid.dk
ftp.sh.cvut.cz

Good luck
