Not sure where to put this- so feel free to move as appropriate

I installed OpenBox on an old GX110 (PIII-500-600Mhz with 384 MegRam)-- Runs great.  Sound card is working, just played .wav file and sounds great.

However, I am looking for a suggestion for program to install to play CDs.  The machine is limited to built-in CD-ROM (may add external CD burner later).

Also, is there an option to add opening sound clip to let me know audibly when OpenBox is fully ready?

Your help (as always) is appreciated,
katie

I'm  still using good OLD Xmms for CD's and most all other music files. Working on new OpenBox after adding xmms-cdread and setting preferences - then play location /dev/cdrom1 (for me).

katie,

You might also try cdp in Synaptic.  It's not fancy and I run it from a command line.  It works great on an old HP PIII laptop that I have.

I used Synaptic to install Xmms & xmms-cdread
Opened xmms & clicked on the "O" on the left of what appears to be a skin representing sound system
Up popped a menue, the first item of which is "Preferences"- clicked on that
A list of Audio I/O pluggins is presented, I chose "CD Audio player 1.2.10"- pushed the "Configure" button
A dialogue popped up listing the following: "device=  /dev/cdrom" & "directory= /mnt/cdrom"-- clicked a couple items that seemed appropriate: "play mode= digital" (also tried analog)  and Volume control= CD-Rom drive"
Then clicked on "Check drive"--- received the following response:
Quote
Device  /dev/cdrom OK
Disk has 12 tacks-
Total length= 65:58
Digital Audio Extraction test: OK

Failed to check directory  /mnt/cdrom
Error: No such file or directory  <CLOSE>

Not sure if I originally  typed "/mnt/cdrom" or not-- but don't think so

It appears that the CDrom is recognized-- now just need to know what to put in there (& any other advice I might need to get Xmms running

Your help would be appreciated
katie

I did install cdp as well---  after trying Xmms I opened the terminal and issued the command "cdp" and my CD started playing and a simple interface appeared--- however I had no idea of how to navigate the interface (wishing to skip around tracks, etc.)-- I had no idea.

I tried closing cdp and the terminal closed-- but the cd kept on reading (however, no sound)

I did like that cdp was almost immediate to run-- but no idea what to do with it.
Your response was appreciated (obviously I have no idea what to do with terminal- but willing to learn)

It worked here for me on my laptop with Openbox, although it is /dev/cdrom

Unfortunately, Alsaplayer is broken, but VLC can get the job done.

You can look over at:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,71065.15.html
about half way down the page old-polack shows a script to play a CD. You may have to change where it says:
 /dev/cdrom1
to
 /dev/cdrom
it works for me.

Hi,

I had tried to read audio CD's before uploading the first beta, for this I used Smplayer (that you find installed by default) and it worked ok... a  bit slow, but I had thought it was the CD being old that was guilty.

Do xmms and xmms-cdread play audio CD's better than Smplayer ?

Hi, Melodie-- great flavor of PClos- flies on my old PIII Dell Optiplex GX110 (& I can't believe how fast Firefox & even OpenOffice load)--- but that distracts from the thread.

I don't see Smplayer listed under Applications?  Was there a change in the release?  [edit]  I just did a Synaptic listing and see that it is installed, but not able to find it among audio programs in the Applications list- where else can I look?

Anyway-- just wanted to thank you for this version- so simple, even a "Windows user" could operate it

Hi,

It's listed under video. It would be possible to make it appear in audio as well. Adding a Category line in /usr/share/applications/smplayer.desktop would do the trick, or maybe one section in the Category line.

(Video applications are able to play Video, and Audio... VLC can do it as well... VLC was not a choice though because it would bring in still more depends, adding to the size of the iso... and I want to keep the possibility to add some more applications if some appear to be missing, such as evince and lshw, that I forgot to install in this version).

I am very happy to know that some users other than myself like it. ^^

So if next you can tell me if xmms-cdread does a better job at reading audio cd's, I could include it in the next quaterly. (I never play CD's, rather rip them... so I don't have much experience with that)

Melodie:

For me xmms-cdread plays audio cd's better then smplayer, because with smplayer the audio stops and starts.  With xmms-cdread the audio is on all the time.
