I fumbled my way into getting e-Sword-9.6.0 running in wine and I thought it might be of interest to other Bible students running PCLinuxOS.
The method I'll outline works for PCLinuxOS-2009.2 and PCLinuxOS-2010. It will likely work for PCLinuxOS-2001.1, but I haven't yet tried it there.
1. From the PCLinuxOS repositories download and install wine and cabextract.
2. From "
http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks" download winetricks. I just left my copy in "~/Downloads" and set it executable. From a terminal window (I used Konsole) in "~/Downloads" run "./winetricks" and install "gecko", "vcrun6", "riched20", and "msls31".
3. From the PCLinuxOS menu, select "More Applications>Emulators>Wine>Configurator". Then set the Audio and Graphics as you like them. Here are some helpful hints on installing wine "

I enabled all of the check-boxes, set the desktop size to 1024x768 {See edits just below}, and set the resolution to 108 dpi. Under the Libraries tab it is NECESSARY to use the drop box labeled "New override for library" to find and then the "Add" button to add "oleaut32", "riched20", and "riched32" to the "existing overrides" box as "(native,builtin)". The "riched20" and "riched32" entries may already be present.
{edits} I discovered later that I could check all of the boxes EXCEPT "Emulate a Virtual Desktop" and that just makes eSword open up like any other application. That way the pop-ups that occur when you mouse-over Strong's links don't get partially hidden by the virtual desktop.
4. From "
http://www.e-sword.net/", select "Downloads" and download the "eSword application installation" to "~/Downloads/eSwordStuff" (which I created beforehand to keep all e-Sword ".exe" files in). Also get whatever Bibles and other modules you find interesting. One of the things I downloaded was the "American Bible Society Maps" under the "Graphics" heading.
5. From the PCLinuxOS menu, select "More Applications>Emulators>Wine>File Manager" and when it opens, find the eSword setup executable. Mine was located in "E:\Downloads\eSwordStuff\setup960.exe" and just double-click on it. Then just follow the the prompts in the install dialogs that show up in wine. I found it necessary to drag the install dialog out of the way of the "File Manager" window to keep it from being hidden. The other thing you can do is temporarily minimize the the "File Manager" until the installation is complete.
6. Install Bibles and other modules that you may have downloaded by double-clicking on their names in "File Manager".
7. You can run e-Sword by closing the "E:" drive window in "File Manager" and opening the "C:" window and looking under "Program Files\e-Sword" to find e-Sword.exe or you can just close the "File Manager" which just takes you back to your PCLinuxOS desktop. There should be two new icons on your desktop that you can double-click on to start e-Sword and there should also be a new PCLinuxOS menu entry for "Wine>Programs>e-Sword>e-Sword" that you can use also.
With the steps outlined above, I've found e-Sword fully functionable in everything (including map viewing) except the "Download" menu choices. That's not an issue because you can use Firefox under PCLinuxOS to download modules and updates. However, if someone finds a solution to the "Download" menu problem, that will be even better.
