another update : I have been experimenting and am now able to play commercial cd's in amarok which now recognizes the commercial cd's . But as for the cd's with the .wav files it's still a no go. . As I had mentioned before the cd's with the .wav files aren't recognized by device notifier although dolphin does recognize the cd's. when I try to play a .wav file from the cd I can't but if I use vlc media player and choose open disk from the toolbar menu it will play. but no other player will play it.

It might be worth the time to convert ALL the files to mp3 or OGG. If you have the space, even to FLAC (lossless)

You can obtain winff from Synaptic. Then

winff>Add> (select all>open)>convert. In the output tab, Convert To>Audio and Preset Device> mp3, OGG or FLAC.

Like I say, bit of time and effort. This way, you will have all your files in one format, easily recognized by both Amarok and Rhythmbox. You could then burn them back to CD's. Be aware, unless you're dubbing from a lossless format, copies of copies are degenerative.
Fair warning: I am a whiny, selfish brat who should be denied access to 2010, per a moderator. Box: Acer Aspire One 110-xxxx model. XP wiped (and flushed), 2010 gnome (despite mod) grafted onto 8g flash HD via livecd.

It is possible that they are not audio CDs at all but data CDs with individual audio files on them.

Can you compare how they appear to commercial audio CDs ? ( maybe in a filemanager )

The cd's that were burnt look the same as the commercial cd's. they all even have folders containing the songs in .ogg and flac format . but I'm unable to play off these formats either .

Those folders you see are 'virtual' folders ........  if you copy from one of them to your HDD, then the file is transcoded 'on the fly'. It is provided to 'make it easy' for the user to copy and transcode audio files from a CD. The files do not actually exist on the CD in those formats.

When you insert a CD, the system should 'see' it and the "Last Plugged In Device" widget should give you a pop up.
You can then click on the left side of the pop up and select with what you wish to play the CD, or transcode it or whatever other 'actions' it is set to provide you.

regards.

That's because they are not on the CD .......  as I said above.
