<SOLVED> Point me to where I can find HELP on KDE4
« on: May 09, 2010, 07:05:37 PM »
I must be looking in the wrong place, but where is the help on PCLOS2010.1 KDE4. So far 2010.1 is a bit like 2009.1. Much time spent trying to iron out the small problems like the computer will not see the plugged in pen drive. Tells you it can see a CD\DVD. Basic operations such as this must work. Have updated through Synaptic and have installed donated sources list. THANKS in anticipation.

Thanks to everyone who responded. The question I ask, is why does the pen drive function perfectly in W2k, PCLOS07 and PCLOS09.1&2 (using PCLOS09.2 now) but when I try to use it with the hard drive that is formatted with ext4, there is 'no go'. I have two computers where I can swap hard drives very easily and have no trouble with either as long as I do not try to access the disk formatted with ext4. This pen drive is a small (250 Mib) Shintaro that has served me well for some years (handy for transferring files between computers).

What I am getting at here is that others are having the same trouble. Are we sure it is not a function of the OS and/or the ext4 file system?
I will look at all the suggestions and try them. Unfortunately the problem is not resolved at present. Thanks again.

Once again thanks for the ideas, and a couple of very interesting threads.

I went out to the nearest town (20 miles - for the non metric people) and purchased a new one.

This forum is the primary place for asking for support. Open one thread for every problem you are experiencing and members of the forum will help you out.

If your problem are kde4 specific, ask them in a kde4 section
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

Try formating the pen drive in vfat or ext3. Some pen drives have strange formats that cannot be identified by Linux. All 3 of my various pen drives are identified and mounted by PCLinuxOS 2010.1.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

I found that with all three of my flash sticks I had to wipe the MBR/Partition table and recreate a DOS partition table before they were properly usable. As Tex said, mine also had some weird set up ... don't know what it was but it was odd - thought it maybe was for Mac compatibility.
I have been successfully using the three sticks since setting them up correctly.

fdisk  is a good tool for manipulating the set up.
