Computer Does not boot live cds
« on: May 09, 2010, 05:59:08 PM »
Hey everyone! I have a problem with my computer see I have an HP Visualize A1280 workstation and want to run linux on it. So I have tried MANY times to boot a live cd to no avail... Trust me I have tried EVERYTHING so I was wondering is there a way to hook it up the hardrive from the Visualize to another computer and install PCLOS? If I do that will it be the same as if I installed it regularly?
make install --not war

No it won't .......  unless the other PC is exactly the same ......  and has the same hardware in every respect.

If there are no difficulties with your hardware being recognised then it should work, with a little preparation.

It might be a very good idea to give the specs of your PC and some details about why it won't boot from CD and what you have tried .........  your EVERYTHING could be very different from someone else's everything.

Would the PC boot from a flash drive or other external drive if you have one available?  That also might be an option.

It's been awhile since I tried playing with this computer so I can only remember staying up all night trying to solve this problem... I honestly don't remember everything I have tried hehe... just got back from Prom so having a hard time thinking... Nut it has 2 P3s 2 gb of RAM (maybe 2.5 not sure), mainly scsi drives but I loaded a PCI IDE card so I can use IDE devices faster. I have an 80gb drive that I'm trying to load with PCLOS and I have 2 cd drives. Nothing crazy just the standard setup.

P.S.

The only distro I have ever gotten to load was Suse becasue I used another computer to boot the live cd and then I switched the hard drives because Suse configures hardware after the computer is restarted. Pretty nifty if you ask me. But I like PCLOS a lot so I really want it or I can reload Suse...

does your "" everything"" include your bootup settings in the BIOS ?

Lee2010, Sounds to me like you already know. Why don't you just write some tutorials instead?

What is "EVERYTHING" that you have tried? Have you looked at the boot order in the bios?  Have you set boot IDE before SCSI?  What exactly have you done that qualifies as "EVERYTHING" ?

Hope you had a good time   ;D

Things are changing everyday in Linux with regard to hardware recognition so I would seriously suggest that you try a new live CD and use verbose mode so that any error you see can be reported back.
It may just need a boot code or two to get her started, or maybe not.

Yes people have had some success with installing PCLOS in one machine and using it in another ....  because hardware detection can take place at every boot if set.
But that assumes that the second set of hardware is also recognised by the OS.
That is the reason to do some tests on booting the HP from CD in the first place .......  so that you can determine what is preventing the booting of the OS.

So over to you ......  you need to do a series of boot attempts with a live CD and report back exactly what happens and what errors occur.

That should give the people here who would help some information to base their suggestions on.

regards.

In the BIOS I have it set as the Operating System as Linux/OS2/OTHER and made sure that the boot order was correct (put hard drive as last and cd drives as first) I have tried the cd is my scsi drive and IDE drives, hooking up the IDE PCI card to see if that would help. Tried plugging the IDE into the mother board and tried unsuccessfully to try and make it boot from USB using a separate boot disk. This computer has a 2 USB 1.1. ports and there is not a boot option in bios for it.
