Cheat Codes
« on: May 08, 2010, 07:55:13 AM »
I have an old craptop, a Thinkpad I series. I have an older version of PCLinuxOS installed, and it works well enough. I downloaded a copy of 2010.1 Pheonix edition and burned it.

The CD will boot up on the laptop, but little will work once I log in. Opening the Control Center never happens. I have tried to run the music program, it won't launch.

The CD works on my main system, so I'm sure the CD burn is good. The checksum was good, and I burned the ISO image to a CD with K3B.

I think I need a cheat code, but I can not find any documentation on cheat codes. I found some posts referencing some, but not a listing of all options. Can some one point me in the right direction?

For what its worth, the laptop is a 386, 750 Mhz machine, 256 meg of ram. This thing is fussy, I have had problems booting other live CD's. The last version of PCLinuxOS just worked.

Hi camorri

The spec for PCLInuxOS really wants a minimum of 512MB of ram, so I can see why you are having issues opening apps in the LiveCD.

Have you considered using one of the "lighter" versions of PCLinuxOS?

There is LXDE (and an LXDE mini version) Gnome-zenmini and of course there is also XFCE and E17.

These all require less hardware to run proficiently, so you may want to give one of those a whirl first.

get lxde (and mini version) here: http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=188

get xfce here: http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=213

get E17 here: http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=215

get Gnome-zenmini here: http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=186

These all call for 384 minimum of ram. So, I guess I'm out of luck.

Where are the cheat codes?

with 256MB RAM AND a Swap file, if you can get a light version installed then it should be usable if not fast.

I just went through an entire installation of Phoenix on a laptop with 256 MB RAM, without a hitch. It was a bit slow, but it completed just fine. (BTW, this was on a "new" laptop that was supposed to have 512 MB RAM, but came with only 256 installed ... and I didn't even know it until I set up my conky script ... although I was wondering why it was running so slow).
