Device Notifier - USB digital Camera help!

Hey all,

Okay, so I'm trying to figure out something extremely simple:  When I plug in a digital camera via USB, I want a prompt to come up that gives a list of options, like 'open folder', 'view with Digicam', etc.

I don't know how to do it.  I don't know if there is a way to do it.

I've been messing around with the device notifier right next to the PC logo.  It doesn't work.  Nothing pulls up.

Are there settings I can mess with or change to get this simple task to happen?  This is on the parents computer, and they are new to the whole Linux thing.  They are used to the 'other' operating system doing this task for them, and there is no way to do this, its a deal breaker for them.

Can anyone help me out with this?  I sure would appreciate it, as I'm trying everything I can to get them used to using this better operating system.

INFO:  OS: PCLinuxOS 2010 KDE full, last update this morning 5/9/10.  Camera: Canon Powershot A480.

I would, like you just expect it to work.

There is some utility in KDE CC - Advanced Users section for adding Cameras and the A480 is in the list.

Maybe something there might be of help.

I have not had that problem so I don't know if it will or not.

Configure Your Desktop >> Advanced User Settings >> Device Actions > and in there are some options to add/modify actions when a device is plugged in.

You may be able to take some of the settings from one of the existing "Actions" and modify/apply it to your own device.

Actually the one I had in mind was  Advanced User Settings - Digital Camera   

I think a specific camera can be added and actions defined in there .........  but as I said I have not used it myself

Thanks for the easy to follow steps!

However, it doesn't work.  I was able to configure the settings to recognize the camera, but the same thing happens - nothing.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Granted, the camera is recognized, for example, when I manually download the photos in Digikam, but again, this is for the parents, who want the prompt to come up.

I have a Fuji camera that was not recognized by the Device Notifier. This is how I got it to work.

   Right click on the Device Notifier and select Device Notifier Settings.
   Click on the Device Actions Icon.
   Click on Add button.
   Enter "Open DigiKam" for the Action Name and click OK.
   Enter /usr/bin/digikam for the command.
   The interface is a little buggy, so click OK at the bottom to save what has been entered so far.
   Select the entry we just made and click the Edit button.
   For the Parameter type: select "Device interface match".
   For Device type:  select Camera.
   Click the "Save parameter changes"
   Click OK.
   Plug your camera in and turn on.

If this worked you should see USB Imaging Interface in the Device Notifier.

Thanks so much for that suggestion.  Great idea.  For me, unfortunately, it didn't work.  I dunno if its a problem with the camera, the OS, or the USB (although I've tried both at the front of the computer and the ports in the back at the motherboard).

I really appreciate all the ideas - if anyone has any more, please let me know, that would be great.  Fortunately, this is not a life/death issue.  However, it is so simply, I really wish it worked.

So I noticed a message on iluvpclinuxos that says:

"Updated libgphoto2 to see if it will fix a problem with some people not being able to mount their cameras."

Thats 1st class service!  I guess I would be one of those people

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I will soon!
