(Solved) Non GUI boot?
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:17:01 PM »
I'm running 2010 KDE..    I'm trying to set up the system so I get the non GUI boot.

I just want to see the text messages reporting the boot progress and then have the process stop at the non GUI 'login' prompt.   (From there I like to log in under my username and then type 'startx' to get KDE running).

I managed this with 2009, but can't seem to find the 'magic bullet' in 2010.   In the control center under 'boot', I've selected GRUB with TEXT MENU.     But  I can't find any way to turn off the display manager.   When I boot, the fancy graphic screen blocks out the start up messages and then takes me to the graphical display login.

Also, [CTRL+ALT+Backspace] won't get me out of the GUI display and drop me to the console..  I just get a speaker beep...  How do I get this feature back?

go into the MCC and select Boot and than choose "Setup an Autologin to Automatically log in" from there un-select "Launch the Graphical Environment when your system starts"  Than Click OK. The next time you boot you will get a text login and will have to type startx to get to the desktop

Another option..

You can change your grub boot options and append the number 3 to boot to init level 3 (console login).  If you also don't want to see bull splash screen change splash=silent to splash=verbose.

If you always want it to boot this way you can edit your /boot/grub/menu.list file and make these permanent.

Great...    I never thought of looking in the "automatically log on thing"..     Thanks.
