How to add a shortcut for sysinfo:/ ?
« on: May 08, 2010, 02:05:08 PM »
I'm trying to create a desktop shortcut for sysinfo:/ using the "Link to Location (URL)" but when I left click on the shortcut Firefox opens or if I already have Firefox open the shortcut opens a new tab.

I tried to right click the shortcut to force it to open with Konqueror but that gave me this error

There appears to be a configuration error. You have associated Konqueror with application/x-desktop, but it cannot handle this file type.

Thanks

P.S. Thanks Tex and Joble for your efforts in adding this to the repos

No idea.  Didn't even wonder about it.  Would be interested in seeing a solution for it.   :)

Use the same command - sysinfo:/  in Konqueror and you'll get a view of the Devices / CPU etc etc.

Then drag the Folder icon in the address bar to the desktop.

Once there, click on and it will prompt you for an app to open with - choose Konqueror (select the "always use this") and thats it.

It shows

Common Folders
Drives
Drives and File type (Ext3 or Ext 4 or NTFS-3g etc)
Drive size and free space. (free space on mounted drives only I think)
Network status
OS info
Kernel version
Current User
KDE version number
CPU info:
Number of Cores
CPU Speed
Current temp
Memory
Total amount of RAM
Free memory + Cache size
Free swap: Inc Size
Graphics
Vendor
Model
Driver type

Would not a bookmark in Konqueror be better? ........  at least Firefox would not be launched just to open it.

Another option which I am now using myself .......  I added Konqueror to the panel, righ-clicked and edited the command, adding   sysinfo:/   to the end of it, so that Konqueror opened at that location.
After that it was just a matter of changing the ICON.

Maybe that would work for you ......  maybe Adding Konq to the Desktop?

I'd already added the konk/sysinfo shortcut to the desktop, and changed the icon to suit and that works well.

I just tried your panel option and edited the command and yup, if works fine - thanks for that JohnBoy.

One thing you may be able to advise me on is how I can change the konq/sysinfo icon on the panel as it defaults to the ? mark icon.  In fact, you may be  able to tell me how to change any of the panel icons, as that functionality seems to be no longer available in 2010KDE4

Probably the best way to set this up is to make a new entry in the menu - Edit Menu - and create it using the command above, name it 'My Computer' or something, and select your choice of Icon, and save it.
From then you should be able to select that menu entry and either Add to Panel or Add to Desktop

This was the best solution IMO. It worked very well for me.

Thanks Johnboy.

Having a further look at the sysinfo  "Computer Page" one small blip is that the nvidia driver or the Network aren't recognised - not a biggy, just a tad curious.

Display Info is:
Vendor:  nVidia Corporation
Model:  GeForce 7050 PV / nForce 630a
Driver:  Unknown

Network info
Network Status Unknown network status

My video card is specified just as using  Nvidia driver.
My network is reported the same as you report.

There are two other packages which you might be interested in .....
gtk-lshw
hardinfo

I have the three installed .....  gtk-lshw should be run as root I think.

Have fun!    :D

I think I'll stick with what I have JohnBoy  ;) - I used to be a bug*** for installing this, and trying out that, but now I mostly install what what I need and leave it at that, 'specially when I have my main 2010.1KDE running so sweetly...

When I'm using my VBox VM I'll give those apps a whirl - thats my play area  ;D ;D

Interesting that nobody created a Konqueror profile that started with sysinfo:/ by default. Isn't that what Konqueror's profiles are for?
