LXDE, severe/crippling issues! urgent
« on: April 25, 2010, 06:49:31 PM »
Guys,

Please bear with me on this one.  I wrote in an earlier post about how I was having the issue of getting a camera to register under LXDE.  It wasn't so much that the camera wasn't registering, there just wasn't really a program I saw to import the pictures.  I got digiKam on here and all was well.  Well, about 2 hours later, and I can barely use this OS.

The main issue is that the mouse, when rolling the pointer around, stops suddenly, freaks out, it pulls up the 'switching desktop' icon and flips back and forth between them rapidly.  Its like the mouse acts on its own.  Windows open up, things are clicked on of their own accord, and it pretty much looks like a huge spam blast, just full of regular different windows popping up all over the place.  The mouse jumps around everywhere or cannot be seen.  It is completely crippling.  I can barely do anything.  I restarted the system, and now my entire toolbar is gone, with a weird blank grey bar at the top of the desktop.  I have no PC Start button.  Before all this, I tried to pull up open office to create something - I went to insert>image, and it froze.  3 times.  What the heck?  So then I pull up Abiword, do the same thing, and when I'm done I want to see a print preview, it tries to pull it up in Gimp as a PDF!!! What the heck??

All that to say, this wouldn't really bother me so much, but this is on my relative's computer, who can be very skeptical of these non-windows operating systems.  I'm a huge PCLinuxfan, and have it on 3 of my own computers.  Honestly, I'm really, really embarrassed right now and just need a solution.  If I can't find one I might just have to wipe the hard drive and try something else.  However, and this is what I don't get, it was happening with LIVE CDs that I was using to test the system - they had the exact same problem.  Now I'm thinking, is it an issue with the optical mouse going nuts?

I've got limited time...I'm only here for another 2-3 hours.  I need a solution, fast.  Please help me!  I don't want them to hate linux, but I don't know what else to do.

Thanks for any assistance you all can provide!

Everyone,

Sorry for freaking out - I've been digging a little deeper and I'm suspecting it may be a problem with their optical mouse.  Although I still can't figure out why the LXDE toolbar completely disappeared, the erratic mouse pointer issue may be unrelated to the system. We're going to get a different mouse and eliminate the variables.  I just went ahead and did a fresh 2010 KDE install, and the problem is here as well.
