Hardware Config Utility in Control Center Semi DOA
« on: May 07, 2010, 05:33:27 AM »
Running PCLOS 2010 on I686 PC with 1GB DDR memory, Athlon XP1800 processor on Asus A7V8X-X Mobo, that previously ran PCLOS 2009 successfully.  I've installed 2010 on the hard drive after MD5 verification.  This 2010 iteration is pretty wonderful, but in typical Linux fashion, some things are no longer working for us.  Can't get Kmid or Timidity to produce sound, though they worked in the 2009 versions.  Other sound functions are working normally.  Porting problem, perhaps?

More seriously, my CD player/burner is not shown nor accessible through Dolphin, though the thumb drive and needless floppy drive are there.  Other resources show the CD hardware to be recognized. The Control Center Hardware Configuration utility is only semi working.  It displays detected hardware including the CD player, but clicking on any of the listed hardware fails to display its info in the right hand column for further action.  Unfortunately I'm very short on Linux troubleshooting skills, though not for lack of countless futile hours trying to get a leg up on it in the past.  Help please!

Did you run a media check before install on the livecd you installed from? Did you burn it at a slow speed (4x)? Did you have the install check for bad blocks on HD when you formatted the partition(s)? These are the only suggestions I can come up with. It sounds like a bad install.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

Hi hpkts - lets see if we can pin a few things down for you.  ;)

Did you do a "clean" fresh install of 2010 - i,e. did you format your hard drive and use a new /home partition?

2009 settings cannot be successfully used in an 2010 install - you can re-use your /home partition and you may get away without issues but sooner rather than later your gonna come a cropper!

I would backup my data and then bring it back to the new 2010 install bit by bit (or byte by byte  ;D) and then you'll be able to quickly pin down what the cause may of been.

My CD/DVD drive is accessible in Dolphin but only when media is loaded.

If you find you have problems with the "full" 2010-KDE version you may want to have a look at the other "lighter" versions which are available  (lxde & lxde-mini / Gnome-zenmini / XFCE / E17 or 2010kde-mini.

Many thanks for the helpful replies.  I have one of those Lite-On 52x CD burners that have produced more reliable
burns than most others in comparison tests, and haven't previously found ultra slow burns to solve past problems.  Used 25x on this occasion.  Pre tested the media disk.  Re-partitioned and did a clean install, but not sure if I tested for bad blocks on HDD.  Will "pull out all stops" and do a second with the full range of precautions.

Slow old me!  The live CD I burned should have been above suspicion because I knew its MD5 checksum agreed with the one provided on the download site.  To be absolutely sure, I downloaded the ISO again, burned it to another CD, did checksum on it.  Matched.  Operating from the live CD produces the same results as OS installed on HDD.  That removes suspicion from the HDD.  Tried the live CD on a different PC equipped with identical mobo, and got identical results:  Dolphin not listing CD drive with functional disk in it, and Control Center Hardware Configuration utility still not responding to any of the hardware listed in left hand column.  Looks as though I'll have to install 2009.2 again to regain functionality.  PCLOS must no longer like the Via chipset on those boards.

That's a drag for you.  Please remember that 2009x is no longer supported.

There is a "Frozen" repo which has been setup by YouCanToo and is located here:
