My favourite apps not in lxde-repos
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:31:21 AM »
I actually like the look of lxde very much, but......  ::) . I've noticed that two of my "essential" apps - k3b and audacity - are not available in the repos. Is this because:
1. I haven't installed yet (just using the live-CD at the moment)
2. They're not yet in the repos, but will be later     or
3. They'll never be available due to some technical/other incompatibility   ??

If the latter (and just to satisfy my curiosity), why?  I've always assumed that if the "guts" of the OS, i.e. the kernel, is the same (as another release) then there's no reason why the same apps can't run in both environments. Looks like I'm wrong.  ???  Thanks.

Well you're wrong about something.  LXDE does not have it's own repo, it uses the same as every other PCLinuxOS 2010 release.

You are correct. You will not see k3b in synaptic from your LiveCD. You have to hit the Reload button, then they should be there.

I don't have my lxde on right now, but does lxde have the KDE4 option on by default?

No, "KDE4 option" is not on by default. In fact, KDE4 is not installed. If you want KDE4, you have two choices -- install PCLinuxOS-LXDE and then install task-kde4 or download and install PCLinuxOS-KDE.

If all you want is to add some KDE apps to LXDE, install PCLinuxOS-LXDE, open Synaptic, click Reload, click Mark all upgrades, click Apply and click Apply. Next click Search and enter the name of the app you want in the search field. Click Search. Mark the app for installation. Follow the same search and mark procedure for all the apps you want. When you have them marked, click Apply and click Apply.

I have Audacity 1.3.6 installed and it runs with no problems. I favor GTK2-based apps for LXDE, which is also GTK2-based. I avoid KDE apps. If I wanted to run KDE apps, I would have PCLinuxOS KDE installed. I prefer LXDE -- simple and lightweight. I use Wodim from the command-line to burn CD's; it's not difficult to use and works perfectly every time. Wodim is installed by default -- once again helping to keep the software "load" light on my P3.

Many thanks to you all. Everything operating as expected, now. Funny thing, this lxde reminds me of kde3...... ;D ;).  Great stuff.  Thanks again. :)  :D
